DAY 3 | VEYANGODA – WILPATTU

Visit the Negombo Fish Market with packed breakfast. Then take part in a boat ride in the Old Dutch Canal of Negombo.

The Fish Market in Negombo, is not like your normal fish stall. Extending from small-scale fishermen who strive to make a living to larger commercial wholesalers, the Negombo Fish Market has an array of choices. There are sharks, barracuda, and dozens of other animals that you might not even recognize. If you prefer to make the most of the local experience, make sure you get here before 6am, as that’s when the buzzing fishing experience starts to fade away.

Meanwhile, the boat ride along the Dutch Canal of Negombo is nothing less an of an experience. This is an experience studded with vibrant birdlife, churches dotted alongside and an array of reptiles that frequent the area. The experience of a fishing village would unfold before your eyes and you will be in for a pure local treat amidst the busy town-folk who get on with their day’s plan.

Transfer from Negombo to Wilpattu and check in at selected campsite.

Overnight stay at Big Game Camp, Wilpattu OR SIMILAR (Breakfast/ Dinner)

DAY 4 | WILPATTU – MIHINTALE – ANURADHAPURA

Take part in a game drive in Wilpattu National Park with packed breakfast.

Wilpattu means ‘natural lakes’ in Sinhala and ’10 lakes’ in Tamil and lakes are exactly what you’ll find at Wilpattu National Park. Visitor numbers remain low, even in high season, which gives Wilpattu a genuine sense of wilderness. This is a place for the more dedicated safari-goer. There are approximately 30 species of mammals in the Wilpattu National Park which include the Sri Lankan Elephant, Sri Lankan Leopard, Lankan Sloth Bear, Sri, Spotted Deer, Buffalo, Sambar and Mongoose.

Transfer from Wilpattu to Mihintale and visit the ancient site which is the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

This sleepy village and temple complex, 13km east of Anuradhapura, holds a special place in the annals of Sri Lankan lore. In 247 BC King Devanampiya Tissa of Anuradhapura was hunting a stag on Mihintale Hill when he was approached by Mahinda, son of the great Indian Buddhist emperor, Ashoka. Mahinda tested the king’s wisdom and, considering him to be a worthy disciple, promptly converted the king on the spot. Mihintale has since been associated with the earliest introduction of Buddhism to Sri Lanka.

Transfer to Anuradhapura and check in at selected hotel.

Overnight stay at Rajarata Hotel, Anuradhapura OR SIMILAR (Breakfast)

DAY 5 | ANURADHAPURA – JAFFNA

Breakfast at the hotel. Then visit the sacred city of Anuradhapura.

The ruins of Anuradhapura are one of South Asia’s most evocative sights. The sprawling complex contains a rich collection of archaeological and architectural wonders: enormous dagobas (brick stupas), ancient pools and crumbling temples, built during Anuradhapura’s thousand years of rule over Sri Lanka. Today, several of the sites remain in use as holy places and temples; frequent ceremonies give Anuradhapura a vibrancy that’s a sharp contrast to the museum-like ambience at Polonnaruwa.

Transfer from Anuradhapura to Jaffna and check in at selected hotel.

Overnight stay at Valampuri Hotel, Jaffna OR SIMILAR (Breakfast)

DAY 6 | JAFFNA – DELFT ISLAND – JAFFNA

Leave the hotel with packed breakfast and catch your ferry from the Jaffna Jetty to Delft Islands.

Located approximately 30 kilometres away from the main land is a magnificent island with rich history from the Chola Dynasty, Portuguese, Dutch and the British Colonial Period. The location is abundant in archaeologically important heritage. Neduntheeve, famously known as Delft Island, is accessible by water and air, and for tourists visiting and villagers the easiest is to travel by ferry. The exhausting but fascinating journey begins from Kurikadduwan, KKD jetty on the Punkudativu Island, which is bridged to the Jaffna Peninsula.

Return to the mainland after the excursion.

Overnight stay at Valampuri Hotel, Jaffna OR SIMILAR (Breakfast/ Lunch)

DAY 7 | JAFFNA – TRINCOMALEE

Breakfast at the hotel. Then transfer from Jaffna to Trincomalee visiting Koneswaram Hindu Temple en route.

Trincomalee (Trinco) sits on one the world’s finest natural harbours. This historic city is old almost beyond reckoning: it’s possibly the site of historic Gokana in the Mahavamsa (Great Chronicle), and its Shiva temple the site of Trikuta Hill in the Hindu text Vayu Purana. Most people just pass through the city on their way to the nearby beaches of Uppuveli and Nilaveli, but the town has some charm, plenty of history and an interesting melange of people.

Check in at selected hotel.

Overnight stay at Anantamaa Hotel, Trincomalee OR SIMILAR (Breakfast)

DAY 8 | TRINCOMALEE LEISURE DAY

Breakfast at the hotel.

Full day at leisure at selected hotel in Trincomalee.

Overnight stay at Anantamaa Hotel, Trincomalee OR SIMILAR (Breakfast)

DAY 9 | TRINCOMALEE – SIGIRIYA

Breakfast at the hotel.

Transfer from Trincomalee to Sigiriya and visit the ancient rock fortress.

Rising dramatically from the central plains, the enigmatic rocky outcrop of Sigiriya is perhaps Sri Lanka’s single most dramatic sight. Near-vertical walls soar to a flat-topped summit that contains the ruins of an ancient civilization, thought to be once the epicenter of the short-lived kingdom of Kassapa. Sigiriya refuses to reveal its secrets easily, and you’ll have to climb a series of vertiginous staircases attached to sheer walls to reach the top. On the way you’ll pass a series of quite remarkable frescoes and a pair of colossal lion’s paws carved into the bedrock. The surrounding landscape – lily-pad-covered moats, water gardens and cave shrines – only add to Sigiriya’s rock-star appeal.

Check in at selected hotel in Sigiriya.

Overnight stay at Hotel Sigiriya, Sigiriya OR SIMILAR (Breakfast)

DAY 10 | SIGIRIYA – MINNERIYA – SIGIRIYA

Breakfast at the hotel.

Take part in a Tuk Tuk ride in Sigiriya including a traditional lunch in a local house.

This is where you will start your Tuk Tuk ride in Sigiriya and head through a rural village. Your Tuk Tuk ride will feature man-made lakes and beautiful paddy fields which will go on to unending stretches. Don’t forget to greet the ever-smiling villagers with the traditional ‘Ayubowan’, simply meaning – May You Live Long! As your ride halts at a local house, you will get the opportunity to enjoy a pure Sri Lankan meal and understand why exactly Rice & Curry is famous throughout the island.

Then head to Minneriya National Park and take part in a half-day game drive.

After lunch, hop into a safari jeep and enter the gateways of elephant country – Minneriya National Park. This national park is one of the best places in the country to see wild elephants, which are often present in huge numbers. Dominated by the ancient Minneriya Wewa, the park has plenty of scrub, forest and wetlands in its 88.9 sq km to also provide shelter for toque macaques, sambar deer, buffalo, crocodiles and leopards. The dry season, from April to October, is reckoned to be the best time to visit as Elephants, which can number 200 or more, come to feed and bathe during what is known as ‘the Gathering’; and flocks of birds, such as little cormorants, painted storks, herons and large pelicans all fish in the shallow waters. However, it’s also possible to see large numbers of elephants here at other times of year.

Overnight stay at Hotel Sigiriya, Sigiriya OR SIMILAR (Breakfast/ Lunch)

DAY 11 | SIGIRIYA – KANDY

Breakfast at the hotel.

Transfer from Sigiriya to Kandy and check in at selected hotel. In the evening, take part in a city tour in Kandy featuring a gem museum, cultural show and the Kandy Temple.

Some days Kandy’s skies seem perpetually bruised, with stubborn mist clinging to the hills surrounding the city’s beautiful centerpiece lake. Delicate hill-country breezes impel the mist to gently part, revealing colorful houses amid Kandy’s improbable forested halo. In the center of town, three-wheelers careen around slippery corners, raising a soft spray that threatens the silk saris worn by local women. Here’s a city that looks good even when it’s raining.

Overnight stay at Thilanka Hotel, Kandy OR SIMILAR (Breakfast)

DAY 12 | KANDY – COLOMBO

Breakfast at the hotel.

Transfer from Kandy to Colombo by local train. Then, take part in a soft walk in Colombo from the Galle Face Green to Pettah – Depends on the time you reach Colombo (based on train times).

Although it’s unlikely it will reclaim its 19th-century moniker ‘the garden city of the East’, Colombo has nevertheless emerged as a must-see stop in Sri Lanka. No longer just the sprawling city you have to endure on your way to the beaches, it has become a worthy destination in its own right and makes an excellent start – or finish – to your Sri Lankan adventures. The legacies of colonial Colombo’s garden roots are still very much intact along its often-shady boulevards. Fort is a compelling place thanks to ongoing restoration of its landmark colonial architecture, while Pettah brims with markets and rampant commerce.
Check in at selected hotel in Colombo.
