Day 01 : SAI GON ARRIVAL (-/-/-)

On arrival, you are met by our guide and transferred to hotel. Formerly known as Saigon, today’s Ho Chi Minh City is the bustling and vibrating economic centre of the South. Over the past few centuries, Saigon was called the “Pearl of the Far East” and was an important trading centre for Chinese, Japanese and Western merchants who travelled along the Saigon River. This metropolis, contradiction of its northern counterpart, is crowded with bikes and motorbikes, excited by numerous shopping areas and sidewalk cafes.

Overnight in Saigon

Meals: No

Day 02 : SAI GON – CU CHI (B/L/D)

Cycling to Cu Chi Tunnel and discover the Tunnel experience. The incredible underground network in Cu Chi stretched over 200 kilometres and became legendary during the American war. The extensive tunnels have been specially constructed with living areas, weapon factories, filed hospitals, command centres, plus accommodation. We visit an exposition hall and a widened section of the tunnels to get a feel of the underground life. There are also possibilities to fire off rounds from an AK47 or MK16 at the nearby rifle range.

After an early breakfast we head out of Saigon by bus and start our cycling towards Mui Ne on the coast. We spend approx 4-5 hours on the bus today. We hit the backroads and head through tropical fruit and rubber plantations, also passing some small fishing villages as we make our way closer to the coast. We finish the ride in Mui Ne, a tranquil white sand beach where we can enjoy a swim after the day’s riding and witness our first sunset over the sea.

Overnight in Mui Ne

Cycling distance: 60km
Cycling grade: Moderate
Terrain: Fairly flat

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We cycle towards Dalat; the route is undulating with occasional climbs. Along the way we pass coffee and tea plantations, as well as flower gardens and pine forests as we reach higher altitude. We rejoin the bus before the road climbs steeply to the mountain town of Dalat. We spend approx 3.5 hours on the bus today. Dalat is a pleasant hill station, formerly known as Le Petit Paris, and has been described as the most beautiful town in Vietnam. It was favoured by the French for its climate, and is now a popular honeymoon resort for the Vietnamese.

Today’s ride is predominantly downhill through pine forests and paddy fields as we descend nearly 1,500m travelling through the Bidoup-Nui Ba National Park. This area is home to rare pine forests as well as small villages inhabited by the ethnic minority people of the central highlands. Once we arrive at the coast, we head by bus (approx 1 hour) to Nha Trang. This beachside town is idyllic, with swaying palms, golden sands and the beautiful deep blue water of the sea.

Overnight in Nha Trang

Cycling distance: 90km
Cycling grade: Moderate to difficult
Terrain: Undulating, end up with a 30km downhill

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning, we’ll head onto the water for a boat cruise around the offshore coastal islands. Bring a towel and bathers because there’s time for swimming and snorkeling. For lunch, our crew will serve up a sumptuous feast of freshly caught seafood and other delights for non-seafood eaters. An interesting optional excursion may include a visit to Thap Ba Hot Springs for the chance to soak your bones in soothing pools of hot, mineral rich mud.

Overnight in Nha Trang

We set off early in the morning by start riding right from the hotel through a new road section that winds along the ocean and connect into Highway1. Then we’ll have a transfer up to Ca pass (Deo Ca) with stop at the beautiful fishing village of Dai Lanh. We get back on the saddle from here into a backroad through the spectacular Bay of Vung Ro and local fishing villages out to TuyHoa city where we have a transfer on to QuyNhon. (Approx 4 hours in the bus today).

Overnight in QuyNhon

Cycling distance: 80km
Cycling grade: Moderate
Terrain: Undulating & Flat

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Another early start by bus until we get to QuangNgai where we cycle to My Lai and the site of the infamous 1968 massacre. After a guided tour around the site and museum we keep riding along backroads through small local villages, where they rarely see foreigners coming through, to Highway 1 where we finish the ride and have a transfer for 2.5 hours to Hoian. Hoi An, the original European trading port in Vietnam dating back to the mid-sixteenth century is now a living museum, with attractive wooden merchant’s houses and pagoda-style temples with Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and European architectural influences. It is also a marvellous place to wander around and enjoy the thriving riverside market. We spend two nights in Hoi An which is also a fantastic place to buy local art or have some clothes tailor-made for you. Its best to bring a picture or a sample of what you want made.
Overnight in Hoi An

Cycling distance: 45km
Cycling grade: Easy
Terrain: Flat

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

The ancient and historic town of Hoi An was for three centuries one of the most important ports in Central Vietnam, visited by sailing ships from all over the world seeking trade in silk, ceramics and spices. In the late 19th Century, the Thu Bon River, linking the port to the open sea, began to silt up and became un-navigable for large vessels. Trade moved up the coast to Tourane, now modern day Danang, and Hoi An went back to being a sleepy little fishing and rice farming community. Today however, Hoi An’s fortunes are once again riding on the crest of the wave as Vietnam’s number one tourist destination. This is largely due to the fact that UNESCO has listed the Old Town as a World Heritage Site with its quaint narrow streets packed with ancient Chinese, Portuguese and Japanese styles of architecture that has changed little from its heyday as a major port of trade. In Hoi An, we include a walking tour of the Old Town where you can visit an Ancient House, a Chinese Assembly Hall, the Japanese Covered Bridge and a Museum. We’ll also spend a morning cycling to the famed Marble Mountains and China Beach. Hoi An is the perfect place to cycle and explore the surrounding countryside, take a boat trip on the Thu Bon River, relax on the nearby beach, enjoy the wonderful cuisine on offer at some of the town’s numerous cheap cafes, or have some clothes made up. Hoi An has nearly 100 silk shops offering same-day service for tailor made clothes at low prices.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This morning, we take a scenic ride to Hue, through a region of Vietnam blessed with magnificent rural and coastal scenery. We drive through Danang, and jump on our bikes where Highway 1 begins its winding ascent over the Hai Van Pass or ‘Pass of the Ocean Clouds’. On the other side of the pass is the pretty Lang Co Beach where we can dismount and drive over another two small passes, get back on your bike to cycle through tranquil back roads and arrive in Hue late afternoon. Hue served as Vietnam’s capital from 1801 to 1945 – during the reign of the Nguyen dynasty emperors – and has a serene and classic character that sets it apart from all other provincial Vietnamese cities.

Overnight in Hue

Cycling distance: 80 km
Cycling grade: Moderate to difficult
Terrain: 10km climb up Hai Van pass, the rest is fairly flat

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

In Hue, we’ll enjoy a leisurely “Dragon Boat” cruise along the timeless Perfume River. Our first stop is the Thien Mu Pagoda – one of the oldest and most significant pagodas in Hue. We’ll then visit the Citadel where we spend a couple of hours exploring Hue’s massive ancient royal walled city and the Forbidden Purple Palace enclosed within. The palace’s splendid ‘Ngo Mon’ gate gives little hint of the destruction that has taken place inside the citadel at the hands of various occupying forces. The bloody ‘Battle of Hue’ during the 1968 Tet offensive all but finished it off but skilled Vietnamese craftsmen, with the help of UNESCO and other non-government organizations, are restoring and rebuilding what remains. Sadly, it can never be returned to its former glory, but it’s still a fascinating insight into Imperial Vietnam. We’ll also visit the Tomb of Emperor TuDuc (1847-1883), one of the best remaining examples of its kind. Constructed between 1864 and 1867, it was more of a pleasure garden than a tomb and the Emperor used it as his second residence. We’ll cycle for the last time on this tour from TuDuc’s Tomb through rural countryside before transferring to the train station to board the ‘Reunification Express’ for our overnight train journey to Hanoi. (N.B: Breakfast is not always available on the train, so it is recommended that you purchase some supplies before boarding in Hue). (SE4 train at 17:36 or SE2 train at 14:35)

Later on, we will take a short visit at Hilton Prison where Vietnamese soldiers did captured & detained American pilots from 1967 till 1973 to learn more about the history of Vietnam War against American Imperialists. You will have the opportunity to see Hanoi’s famed old quarter from the seat of a cyclo. During your tour around the district you will see some of the areas original 36 streets which have always sold the same wares. Silver Street, Silk Street and Flower Street are just a few. During your adventure through this maze of streets you will see traditional ‘tube houses’, a style of architecture indigenous to this part of Hanoi.
