Angkor
Angkor is a vast temple complex featuring the magnificent remains of several capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century AD. These include the famous Angkor Wat temple and the Bayon temple at Angkor Thom. The Angkor Wat temple is the most magnificent and largest of all the monuments at Angkor. It name means “City Temple” and it is considered to be the largest religious structure in the world. From the base to the tip of the highest tower it’s 669 feet (213 meters) of breathtaking stone reliefs in the elaborate Khmer style. The Bayon temple features a sea of over 200 massive stone faces looking in all direction. Each face has an enigmatic smile, an instantly recognizable image of Angkor, as familiar as Angkor Wat itself. In fact, many people assume that the faces are an integral part of Angkor Wat but it stands in fact at the center of Angkor Thom, the last great capital of the Khmer empire.
During it’s long history Angkor went through many changes in religion converting between Hinduism to Buddhism several times. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is one of the prime tourist attractions in South-east Asia.
