Thimphu Sightseeing
Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang) — A short drive opens sweeping views across the Thimphu Valley, presided over by the serene Buddha Dordenma.
King’s Memorial Chorten — A beloved landmark, constantly circumambulated by locals spinning prayer wheels and murmuring mantras; conceived by His Majesty Jigme Dorji Wangchuck and completed in 1974 as a monument to peace and prosperity.
Trashichhoedzong — An imposing fortress-monastery housing the Secretariat, the King’s Throne Room and key offices; also the summer residence of the Je Khenpo (Chief Abbot). Visits focus on exterior courtyards and accessible sections, per schedule and protocol.
Etiquette & Essentials
Respect & dress: At chortens, dzongs and temples, dress modestly (shoulders/knees covered), remove hats and walk clockwise around sacred sites. Interior photography is often not permitted—follow your guide’s lead.
Altitude & pace: Paro and Thimphu sit in high valleys; move gently on day one, hydrate well and avoid heavy exertion.
Practicalities: Currency is the Ngultrum (BTN) (small INR notes often accepted). Power sockets commonly Type D/G—carry a universal adaptor. Weather shifts quickly; pack a light layer, sun protection and lip balm.
Settle into your hotel in Thimphu and enjoy the evening at leisure—perhaps a gentle stroll past traditional shopfronts or a warming bowl of thukpa in a cosy café. Overnight: Thimphu hotel.
