This itinerary traces a gentle arc from the Central Valley to the Caribbean, weaving together rainforest, volcano vistas and easy island time. You’ll touch down in San José before moving to Arenal, where a guided walk in Arenal Volcano National Park sets the tone: lava fields softened by jungle, birdsong in the canopy, and the chance to spot sloths and howler monkeys.

Rolling east, the vibe shifts to the Afro-Caribbean coast at Puerto Viejo. A day along the Cahuita National Park trail brings white-sand coves and calm turquoise water for swims between wildlife sightings. Evenings mean palm-shaded cafés, fresh seafood and warm ocean breezes—unhurried and welcoming.

Crossing the Sixaola border, boats whisk you to Bocas del Toro, a laid-back archipelago of turquoise bays and sandy islets. Here, free days invite snorkelling, hammock hours and sunset boat rides, before looping back to San José. With shared road & boat transfers arranged, daily breakfast included, and optional add-ons—from the La Fortuna Waterfall to soothing hot springs—pre-bookable, you set the pace while we handle the details.

Day 1 : FROM NEW YORK SKIES TO SAN JOSé (SJO) — TOUCHDOWN IN THE HEART OF COSTA RICA

Touch down at San José International Airport (SJO), where warm tropical air and mountain silhouettes set the scene for your Costa Rica holiday. After clearing immigration and collecting your luggage, meet our driver in the arrivals hall for your smooth private transfer to your San José hotel. Watch the city unfold—colourful barrios, flowering jacarandas, and coffee aromas drifting from corner cafés—as your journey begins.

Settle into your room, refresh, and ease into the pura vida pace—perhaps a gentle stroll to a nearby café or a relaxed dinner (at your own cost) as you tune into your Costa Rica itinerary.

Good to Know

• Your arrival transfer is scheduled to your flight—no waiting in taxi lines.
• Keep essentials in your carry-on: passport, insurance, meds, and a light layer for cool San José evenings.
• Local currency is the Costa Rican Colón (CRC); cards are widely accepted in the capital.

Overnight: San José (city hotel).

Day 2 : SAN JOSE→ ARENAL — FROM CITY BUZZ TO VOLCANO VIEWS

After breakfast, depart San José by shared transfer across coffee country and patchwork pastures towards the lush lowlands of Arenal. On arrival, check in and take a short rest before setting out on a guided walking tour in Arenal Volcano National Park. Your naturalist guide will trace the volcano’s notable eruptive periods and point out hardened lava fields, young forest and viewpoints framing the majestic—now mostly quiet—cone.

As you wander beneath towering ceiba and guarumo trees, listen for the bark of howler monkeys, watch treetops for dozing sloths, and scan the leaf litter for anteaters and other rainforest favourites. With mist drifting over emerald slopes and birdsong carrying through the canopy, this is classic Costa Rica—verdant, alive and endlessly photogenic.

Good to Know

• Trails are mostly packed-earth and lava rock; wear closed shoes with grip.
• Pack a light rain jacket, reusable water bottle and binoculars for wildlife viewing.
• Wildlife is wild—sightings can’t be guaranteed, but the park is rich in biodiversity.

Overnight: Arenal.

Day 3 : ARENAL — DAY AT LEISURE WITH OPTIONAL EXPERIENCES

Wake to mist lifting off the emerald slopes of Arenal Volcano and set your own pace. Enjoy a slow hotel breakfast, sip Costa Rican coffee on the terrace, or simply take in the classic cone silhouette from the gardens. Today is entirely at leisure, with a menu of optional activities to deepen your rainforest experience.

Optional: La Fortuna Waterfall (Extra Cost)

Descend the 500-metre trail through secondary forest to the base of the 60-metre cascade. Look for bromeliads, butterflies and resting sloths along the way. At the pool, you may swim in designated areas, capture photos of the blue-green gorge, or relax on the rocks and listen to the thunder of the falls.

Your visit supports the local community — 100% of the entrance fee funds projects via the La Fortuna Development Association (schools, nutrition centres, orphanage and road upkeep).

Other Optional Activities (Extra Cost)

Hot springs soak (day or evening passes).
Hanging bridges canopy walk with wildlife spotting.
Zip-lining or canyon adventure (weather dependent).
Chocolate & coffee farm experiences.
Night walk to discover frogs and nocturnal life.

These activities can be booked with us; pre-booking before departure is required and subject to availability.

• All above are optional and available at extra cost.
• Bring closed shoes with grip, rain jacket, swimwear and a small towel.
• Weather in Arenal can change quickly; showers are common year-round.

Optional: Sloth Tour from Arenal

Set off along a gentle 1.5 km trail through a protected property famed for its sloth habitat. The mix of climate, shelter and abundant guarumo (a favourite food) creates an oasis for these endearing, slow-moving mammals. Your specialist guide will help you scan the canopy, riverside foliage and feeding trees for resident wildlife—often including howler monkeys, colourful birds and butterflies.

Good to know: Trail is suitable for adults and families; wear closed shoes and bring a light rain jacket. Wildlife is wild—sightings are not guaranteed, though guides are highly skilled at locating sloths.

Optional: Paradise Hot Springs Pass (Arenal)

Spend an unhurried session soaking in mineral-rich thermal pools and cascading waterfalls, framed by tropical gardens and views of Arenal Volcano. Drift between warm pools, try the Jacuzzi and hydromassage features, or simply lounge beneath palms and flowering heliconias. The waters are known for aiding muscle relaxation, easing stress and leaving skin refreshed.

Includes: Day/evening access (as booked) and a traditional meal (lunch or dinner). Bring swimwear, a small towel and flip-flops; lockers and towels may be available on site.
