Notes: Camping on Kilimanjaro is rustic but well-supported. The crew sets up tents, provides hot meals, and arranges water refills. Portable private toilets are carried for group use. Showers are not available, but warm water for washing is provided daily. Luggage is carried by porters (10–12 kg per person); trekkers carry their own daypack with essentials.
Important Travel Information
Who is this trek suitable for?
This climb is physically demanding and best suited to travellers with good fitness and determination. Expect long trekking days (5–8 hours) and a very tough summit day (11–15 hours). No technical climbing is required, but stamina, flexibility, and a positive mindset are essential. Porters carry your main luggage; you carry a small daypack with water, snacks, and extra layers.
Altitude and acclimatisation
The Lemosho Route offers one of the best acclimatisation profiles on Kilimanjaro. Maximum altitude is Uhuru Peak (5,895m). The route follows the principle of “climb high, sleep low” with gradual altitude gain. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is possible—common symptoms include headache, nausea, or fatigue. Walking slowly, drinking plenty of water, and listening to guides are key to success.
Accommodation
In Arusha, you stay in a comfortable lodge with modern facilities. On the mountain, nights are spent in tented camps. Each trekker shares a dome tent (2 per tent), with a dining tent and toilet tents provided. The style is basic but supported by an experienced crew who set up camp, prepare meals, and assist throughout the climb.
Meals
Three meals per day are provided during the trek, freshly prepared by the mountain cook team. Expect a mix of soups, pasta, rice dishes, vegetables, and occasional meat. Breakfasts usually include porridge, eggs, bread, and tea/coffee. Lunch may be a hot meal or picnic box depending on the day’s route. Vegetarian options are available, but strict diets (vegan, gluten-free, lactose-free) are harder to maintain—bringing supplementary snacks is strongly recommended.
Drinking water
Safe drinking water is supplied throughout the trek. Porters collect water from streams, which is treated and filtered before use. Trekkers should carry a refillable bottle or hydration bladder. Energy drink powders or purification tablets are optional extras.
Guides, porters & tipping
Climbs are fully supported by certified English-speaking guides, a cook, and a porter team. Tipping is an important part of Tanzanian trekking culture. As a guideline, allow US$200–300 per climber for the full trek, to be distributed among the crew. Your lead guide will provide advice on fair and customary amounts.
Weather & trekking seasons
The best months are January–March and June–October. Days are usually warm, but temperatures fall below freezing at night above 4,000m and can reach -10°C to -20°C near the summit. Rain is possible at any time. Proper layered clothing, waterproofs, and a four-season sleeping bag are essential.
Health & vaccinations
Tanzania requires a valid Yellow Fever certificate if travelling from a risk country. Recommended vaccinations include tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis A, and diphtheria. Malaria risk is low on the mountain but present in lowland areas—mosquito protection is advised in Arusha. Consult your GP or a travel clinic 6–8 weeks before travel.
Visas
A tourist visa is required for entry to Tanzania. This can be obtained online in advance or on arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport. A passport valid for at least 6 months with one blank page is essential.
Insurance
Travel insurance is mandatory. It must cover trekking up to 6,000m, medical evacuation, and repatriation by air. Proof of insurance may be requested before the climb.
Money
The local currency is the Tanzanian shilling, but US dollars are widely accepted for tips and purchases. Bring small denominations in clean notes (issued after 2009). ATMs are available in Arusha but not on the mountain.
Responsible travel
We are committed to ethical climbs that follow the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP) guidelines. Porters are paid fair wages, provided with proper gear, and loads are strictly limited. Please support porter welfare by keeping luggage within the 10–12kg allowance. Use refillable bottles to avoid plastic waste.
