Day 2 : WELCOME TO AUCKLAND – GATEWAY TO NEW ZEALAND'S WONDERS

Haere mai – welcome to Aotearoa! After touching down in the vibrant harbour city of Auckland, often referred to as the City of Sails, you’ll be warmly greeted and transferred to your stylish central accommodation at M Social, Auckland – a modern hotel perfectly positioned along the bustling waterfront.

Settle into your surroundings and take a gentle stroll along the lively Viaduct Harbour, where gleaming yachts bob in the sunlight and locals sip coffee along the promenade. Depending on your arrival time, the rest of the day is yours to explore at your own pace. You may choose to ride to the top of the Sky Tower for panoramic views across the Hauraki Gulf, delve into the city's Māori and Pacific heritage at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, or enjoy a relaxing walk through the leafy Domain parklands.

From cosmopolitan cafes and designer boutiques to historic neighbourhoods like Parnell and Ponsonby, Auckland offers the perfect blend of urban energy and laid-back charm. If you prefer a scenic escape, consider an optional ferry ride to Waiheke Island, known for its boutique wineries and golden beaches (optional at extra cost).

Tonight, return to M Social to unwind and enjoy the views of the waterfront as you ease into the rhythm of New Zealand life. The adventure has only just begun.

Day 3 : AUCKLAND TO THE BAY OF ISLANDS – ANCIENT FORESTS & MāORI HERITAGE

After breakfast, leave behind the urban buzz of Auckland and journey north across the iconic Harbour Bridge, heading into the lush, rolling landscapes of Northland. Your first stop is at the serene Reed Memorial Park, where you’ll experience the majestic beauty of New Zealand’s ancient forests from an elevated canopy walkway. Wander among towering kauri trees – some over 500 years old – and feel the spirit of these living giants that have witnessed centuries of history.

Continue to the cascading Whangārei Falls, formed more than two million years ago. Surrounded by native bush and walking trails, this picturesque waterfall offers a perfect spot to stretch your legs and take in the natural splendour of the region.

From here, journey further north to one of New Zealand’s most treasured coastal regions – the stunning Bay of Islands. Dotted with 144 subtropical islands, this marine paradise is a haven of warm turquoise waters, golden coves, and abundant marine life. Rich in both Māori culture and early European history, this region is widely regarded as the **birthplace of the nation**.

You’ll be welcomed to the sacred Waitangi Treaty Grounds, where the pivotal 1840 agreement between Māori chiefs and British settlers was signed. Explore the magnificent carved meeting house, wander through the interactive museum, and view the imposing waka taua – a traditional Māori war canoe that can carry over 80 warriors. This deeply moving experience offers a powerful introduction to New Zealand’s bicultural heritage.

Later, hop aboard a short ferry and cross the bay to the charming seaside village of Russell, where you’ll spend the next two nights at the historic Duke of Marlborough Hotel. With its waterfront location and colonial charm, this iconic hotel has been “refreshing rascals and reprobates since 1827” – the perfect place to relax, enjoy fresh seafood, and soak up the coastal tranquillity.

Breakfast included

Day 4 : DISCOVER THE BAY OF ISLANDS – CAPE REINGA ADVENTURE OR COASTAL CRUISE

Today offers a unique opportunity to explore the northern reaches of New Zealand through one of two incredible experiences. Choose between a full-day guided journey to the remote and sacred Cape Reinga, or a scenic cruise through the Bay of Islands followed by an insightful tour of Russell’s colourful colonial past.

Option A: Discover the Far North of New Zealand – Cape Reinga Day Tour (optional at extra cost)

Set off early aboard the Bay Belle Ferry from Russell to Paihia, where you’ll join a comfortable Great Sights coach (shared with other passengers) for a full-day exploration to the very tip of the North Island. Witness the place where the Pacific Ocean meets the Tasman Sea, creating a powerful natural spectacle at Cape Reinga. According to Māori legend, this is the departure point of spirits journeying to their ancestral homeland of Hawaiki.

Travel along the legendary Ninety Mile Beach (Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe), a vast sweep of golden shoreline bordered by shifting sand dunes. Adventurous travellers may try their hand at sandboarding down the dunes (equipment provided). You’ll also stand beneath the iconic Cape Reinga lighthouse, taking in sweeping coastal vistas and hearing fascinating stories from your expert local guide about Māori traditions, geology, and colonial history.

A delicious lunch is included during this memorable journey. In the evening, return to Russell by ferry, completing a day filled with cultural significance and awe-inspiring scenery.

Option B: Hole in the Rock Cruise & Russell Historic Walking Tour (optional at extra cost)

This morning, board a purpose-built catamaran for a spectacular cruise through the Bay of Islands, skimming along the dramatic Cape Brett Peninsula. Marvel at the historic Cape Brett Lighthouse and the tour’s highlight – the famous Hole in the Rock. Weather permitting, your vessel will pass through this stunning sea arch and into the Grand Cathedral Cave, offering exceptional photo opportunities.

Keep an eye out for playful dolphins, whales, and seabirds as your skipper shares engaging commentary on the bay’s natural wonders and seafaring past. The cruise includes a relaxing stop at Otehei Bay on Urupukapuka Island, where you can enjoy a swim, explore the trails, or purchase lunch from the on-site café (own cost).

Upon returning to Russell in the afternoon, meet your knowledgeable local guide for a walking tour of this charming town. Once dubbed the ‘hell hole of the Pacific’ due to its rowdy 19th-century sailors, Russell now showcases well-preserved historic buildings and sweeping views from Flagstaff Hill. Gain a deeper appreciation of New Zealand’s early colonial history and its transformation into the tranquil village you see today.

Breakfast included

Day 5 : RETURN TO AUCKLAND – CULTURAL DISCOVERIES & COASTAL VIEWS

After a leisurely breakfast, it’s time to farewell the tranquil beauty of the Bay of Islands and journey south, travelling through picturesque rural towns and along stretches of sparkling coastline dotted with golden beaches. As the road leads you back to New Zealand’s largest city, prepare to uncover more of what makes Auckland such a dynamic and diverse destination.

On arrival, enjoy a comprehensive sightseeing tour of Auckland, known fondly as the City of Sails for its vibrant harbour and sailing culture. Visit Bastion Point for sweeping views across the city skyline and Waitematā Harbour, and explore the leafy, boutique-filled streets of Parnell Village – one of Auckland’s oldest and most charming neighbourhoods.

Continue along the scenic waterfront drive, passing serene bays and bustling marinas, and soak in the atmosphere of the energetic Viaduct Harbour area, home to a lively mix of waterfront dining, bars, and modern urban development.

This afternoon, delve deeper into New Zealand’s rich heritage with a guided tour of the Auckland Museum. Housed in a striking neoclassical building within the Auckland Domain, the museum offers an exceptional introduction to the cultures and artistic legacies of the Māori and other Pacific Island peoples. From treasured artefacts to powerful war memorials and beautifully carved meeting houses, this visit provides insight into the stories that shaped Aotearoa.

Return to the stylish M Social Auckland for a relaxing evening in the heart of the city, with time to explore the surrounding neighbourhood or enjoy dinner with views over the harbour.

Breakfast included

Day 6 : AUCKLAND TO THE COROMANDEL PENINSULA – COASTAL ROADS & PANORAMIC VIEWS

Leave the bustle of the city behind this morning as you journey across the fertile Hauraki Plains, a lush agricultural heartland framed by distant mountain ranges. Your route heads east towards the historic gold-mining town of Thames, gateway to the magnificent Coromandel Peninsula, one of New Zealand’s best-kept coastal secrets.

From Thames, the road hugs the shoreline along the peninsula’s scenic western edge, offering a breathtaking coastal drive. On clear days, look across the shimmering Firth of Thames – you may even catch a glimpse of Auckland’s SkyTower on the distant skyline. As native pōhutukawa trees cling to rocky outcrops and waves crash below, it becomes clear why this route is considered one of the country’s most beautiful.

Stop near the quaint village of Coromandel to visit the quirky and much-loved Driving Creek Railway. This narrow-gauge mountain railway winds its way through regenerating native forest, pottery workshops, and hand-built tunnels before reaching the summit at the whimsically named ‘EyeFull Tower’. From here, enjoy sweeping panoramic views over the surrounding countryside, forested hills, and out towards the Hauraki Gulf.

Later, continue eastward across the spine of the peninsula, winding through lush bushland and valleys before arriving at the laid-back coastal resort town of Whitianga, nestled on the shores of Mercury Bay. Your accommodation tonight is at the comfortable Oceans Resort, ideally located for exploring the beachside charm of this friendly seaside town.

Breakfast included

Day 7 : EXPLORING THE COROMANDEL – HOT WATER BEACH, HAHEI & COOKS BEACH

Wake up to the relaxed rhythm of the Coromandel Peninsula, where nature paints with a rich palette of white cliffs, golden beaches, emerald forests, and turquoise seas. In summer, this vibrant landscape is made even more striking by the crimson blooms of the native Pōhutukawa trees – often called the New Zealand Christmas Tree.

Today is all about discovering some of the region’s most iconic coastal highlights. Begin with a visit to the much-loved Hot Water Beach, where warm geothermal springs bubble just beneath the surface of the sand. When the tide is right, grab a spade and dig your own natural spa pool, allowing the heated waters to rise and fill your custom-made tub – a truly unforgettable Coromandel experience!

Next, stroll along the nearby Hahei Beach, a pristine stretch of white sand backed by lush greenery and dramatic headlands. The views here are breathtaking, and the peaceful setting invites you to pause, breathe, and take in the natural beauty that surrounds you. This is one of the best places to experience the Coromandel’s renowned coastline at a leisurely pace.

Continue to Cooks Beach, named in honour of Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour into Mercury Bay in 1769. The beach itself is a broad sweep of golden sand, now a beloved summer escape for many Kiwis. As you walk along the bay, imagine the awe Cook must have felt on seeing this untouched land for the first time.

From Cooks Beach, you have the option to catch a short ferry across the water back to Whitianga and enjoy a scenic walk to your accommodation at Oceans Resort, or you may prefer to return by vehicle with your driver (optional return mode).

Breakfast included

Day 8 : COROMANDEL TO ROTORUA – GEOTHERMAL WONDERS & MāORI CULTURE

Leave the coastal charm of the Coromandel Peninsula behind as you travel along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway, passing through the sun-kissed towns of Whangamatā and Tauranga, nestled within the fertile region of the Bay of Plenty. Golden beaches and sparkling bays line the road, offering glimpses of New Zealand’s relaxed coastal lifestyle.

Turning inland, pause for a refreshing bushwalk near Okere Falls, a series of cascading rapids surrounded by lush native forest. Well-formed walking tracks and scenic lookouts provide a perfect introduction to the dramatic landscapes that lie ahead.

Continue on to Rotorua – the beating heart of New Zealand’s geothermal activity and a spiritual centre of Māori heritage. This bubbling, steaming landscape is steeped in ancient stories and cultural traditions, offering a truly unique window into Aotearoa’s identity.

No visit to Rotorua is complete without time at the world-renowned Te Puia. More than just a geothermal wonderland, Te Puia is also home to the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute and an inspiring Kiwi bird conservation project. Here, you’ll be warmly welcomed and treated like whānau (family), with your experience enhanced by a private guide who will accompany you throughout your visit.

Marvel at erupting geysers, bubbling mud pools, and intricately carved meeting houses, while gaining a deeper understanding of Māori customs, art forms, and ancestral knowledge. Te Puia offers a captivating blend of natural power and cultural depth, making it a true highlight of your journey.

Your accommodation this evening is the centrally located Millennium Hotel Rotorua, offering tranquil views over Lake Rotorua or the city’s geothermal reserve – a perfect base for the days of discovery to come.

Breakfast included

Day 9 : ROTORUA – VOLCANIC VALLEYS, HOBBITON MAGIC & MāORI CULTURAL FEAST

Today offers a choice between two unforgettable excursions – one delving into the dramatic natural history of New Zealand’s most explosive volcanic event, and the other into the enchanting realm of fantasy at the world-famous Hobbiton Movie Set. Later, immerse yourself in Māori tradition during an extraordinary cultural and culinary evening experience.

Option 1: Waimangu Volcanic Valley & Lake Rotomahana Cruise (optional at extra cost)

Step into the Waimangu Volcanic Valley, the world's youngest geothermal system, born from the devastating eruption of Mt. Tarawera in 1886. This cataclysmic event destroyed Māori villages and the once-renowned Pink and White Terraces – natural wonders considered the eighth wonder of the world. Today, the valley tells a haunting yet beautiful story through its steaming craters, vividly coloured lakes, and eerie silence.

Enjoy a leisurely walk through this otherworldly landscape before boarding a cruise across Lake Rotomahana, where geothermal activity steams from the lake’s edges. Here, learn the story of Guide Sophia and see newly formed silica terraces emerging slowly from the earth, testament to nature’s power to regenerate and reshape.

Option 2: Experience Middle-earth at Hobbiton Movie Set (optional at extra cost)

Enter the magical world of Middle-earth with a guided tour of the original Hobbiton Movie Set, nestled in the rolling hills of Waikato. This charming ten-acre site was the filming location for The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, and remains a dreamlike destination for fans and newcomers alike.

Join your Hobbiton guide (shared with other guests) to explore the Hobbit Holes, the Green Dragon Inn, The Millhouse, and many other iconic structures. At Bagshot Row, step inside a beautifully detailed Hobbit Hole and get a true glimpse into the Shire’s idyllic lifestyle. This immersive experience captures the wonder of the films and the natural beauty of the New Zealand countryside.

Evening Experience: Te Pā Tū Māori Cultural Feast & Performance (included)

This evening, be transported to a world of ancient ritual and storytelling with a visit to Te Pā Tū (formerly Tamaki Māori Village). Set within a forest clearing surrounded by towering Tawa trees and blazing bonfires, this immersive cultural celebration is aligned with the Māori lunar calendar (maramataka), and adapts with the seasons.

During the warmer months, Tū Te Rā celebrates themes of harvest, warfare, and peace, while the winter season's Tū Te Ihi honours Matariki – the Māori New Year – with energy, mysticism, and celestial celebration. Your evening begins with forest canapés (horotai) and culminates in a magnificent four-course fusion feast of Māori-inspired dishes, crafted by indigenous chefs. The revered hāngī (earth oven) features prominently in the menu, served al fresco in warmer weather or within the traditional wharekai if cooler.

Return hotel transfers are included (shared with other guests), ensuring a relaxed and seamless evening as you absorb this powerful and authentic expression of Māori culture.

Breakfast included | Dinner included

Day 10 : ROTORUA TO NAPIER – THUNDERING FALLS, VOLCANIC PEAKS & ART DECO ELEGANCE

Your journey south continues today through the spectacular heart of New Zealand’s North Island. The first stop is the thunderous Huka Falls, where over 220,000 litres of water surge every second through a narrow volcanic ravine. The sheer power and turquoise clarity of the water is mesmerising – a must-see spectacle on your way to Lake Taupō.

Soon after, take in the panoramic vistas of Lake Taupō, New Zealand’s largest lake and a shimmering inland sea formed by a colossal volcanic eruption thousands of years ago. On a clear day, gaze across its vast waters toward the dramatic, snow-dusted peaks of Mount Ruapehu, Mount Ngāuruhoe, and Mount Tongariro, all part of the UNESCO-listed Tongariro National Park.

Your next destination is Napier, a seaside gem and one of the world’s most complete cities of Art Deco architecture – second only, some say, to Miami Beach. Yet Napier’s elegant façades and joyful design hide a tragic past. The city was almost entirely destroyed by the devastating 1931 earthquake and rebuilt in the bold, geometric style of the time.

This afternoon, meet your expert local guide for a fascinating walking tour of Napier, where engaging stories and visual delights bring the city’s heritage to life. From zigzag motifs and sunbursts to beautifully restored buildings, every corner tells a tale of resilience, creativity, and 1930s glamour.

Tonight, indulge in a truly special culinary experience. You’ll dine at the prestigious Mission Estate Winery, New Zealand’s oldest winery, established in 1851 by French missionaries. Enjoy a refined evening within the beautifully restored seminary buildings, with a menu that showcases the best of Hawke’s Bay produce and award-winning wines. Sweeping vineyard views and timeless ambience set the perfect scene for a memorable dinner in wine country.

Breakfast included | Dinner included

Day 11 : NAPIER TO WELLINGTON – VINEYARDS, CABLE CARS & NATIONAL TREASURES

This morning, journey south through the sun-soaked vineyards and fertile orchards of Hawke’s Bay, one of New Zealand’s premier wine regions. As the road winds into the forested Wairarapa Ranges, the landscape transforms into dramatic bush-covered hills and rugged peaks before descending into the vibrant harbour city of Wellington – the nation’s capital.

On arrival, take in the architectural grandeur of New Zealand’s Parliament Buildings, including the famous ‘Beehive’ – a striking circular building that houses the Executive Wing and has become an iconic symbol of Wellington.

Next, head to the Kelburn Lookout for panoramic views over Wellington’s compact, cosmopolitan cityscape. From here, board the charming Wellington Cable Car for a scenic descent into the heart of the city. This historic red cable car has been transporting locals and visitors since 1902 and remains one of Wellington’s most beloved attractions.

Your final stop today is the world-renowned Te Papa Tongarewa – Museum of New Zealand, a cutting-edge cultural and natural history museum situated right on the waterfront. With interactive exhibits and thought-provoking installations, Te Papa offers deep insight into New Zealand’s land, people, wildlife, and evolving identity. Discover Māori taonga (treasures), dramatic earthquake simulations, and contemporary Kiwi art and culture – all under one fascinating roof.

Your accommodation this evening is the elegant DoubleTree by Hilton Wellington, ideally located in the city centre and perfect for exploring the capital’s vibrant nightlife, craft beer scene, or harbourside walks at your leisure.

Breakfast included

Day 12 : WELLINGTON TO NELSON – SCENIC FERRY, WINE COUNTRY & SUNSHINE COAST

This morning, your South Island adventure begins with one of the most spectacular ferry journeys in the world. Departing from Wellington, cruise across the dramatic waters of the Cook Strait before entering the serene beauty of Queen Charlotte Sound. Keep watch for pods of dolphins riding the bow waves or seabirds gliding effortlessly overhead as the ferry weaves through sheltered bays, lush forested headlands, and tranquil inlets.

Upon arrival in the port town of Picton, travel a short distance south to Blenheim, the heart of Marlborough’s world-famous wine region. With sun-drenched valleys and fertile plains, this area is globally celebrated for its Sauvignon Blanc and premium wine production. Enjoy a relaxed visit to one of the region’s premier wineries, where you’ll sample a flight of crisp, aromatic wines while soaking up vineyard views and learning about Marlborough’s unique terroir.

From Marlborough, continue west into the Nelson region, a corner of the South Island renowned for its sunny microclimate, vibrant arts scene, and proximity to stunning national parks. Your base for the next two nights is the elegant Heritage Rutherford Hotel in the heart of Nelson, ideally situated for discovering the local cafés, galleries, and golden beaches that make this region so beloved by locals and visitors alike.

Breakfast included

Day 13 : ABEL TASMAN NATIONAL PARK – GOLDEN COVES & FORESTED TRAILS

Welcome to paradise! Today’s adventure takes you into the breathtaking Abel Tasman National Park, a coastal sanctuary of golden-sand coves, turquoise lagoons, and lush native bush. With few roads and no towns inside the park, most journeys are made by boat – adding to the sense of seclusion and wonder.

From the seaside village of Kaiteriteri, your day begins with a scenic boat journey along the park’s glittering coastline. Depending on your interests, you can choose from one of the following unforgettable experiences:

Option A: Full Park Scenic Cruise (non-walking option, optional at no extra cost)

Sit back and relax on a 3–4 hour cruise that showcases the best of New Zealand’s smallest national park. Glide past iconic landmarks such as the world-famous Split Apple Rock, remote golden beaches, and rocky outcrops teeming with New Zealand fur seals. You’ll pass stunning locations like Anchorage, Bark Bay, Tonga Quarry, Awaroa, and Tōtaranui Beach. After your cruise, enjoy some free time in Kaiteriteri before your late afternoon transfer back to Nelson.

Option B: Astrolabe Beaches & Bays Walk (7 km, 2.5 hours – moderate, optional at no extra cost)

After the scenic cruise, disembark at Apple Tree Bay for a beautiful self-guided coastal walk to Anchorage Beach. This gentle 7 km trail meanders through forest-fringed bays and golden inlets, with plenty of spots to pause, paddle or simply soak in the serenity. Conclude your walk at Anchorage, where you’ll reconnect with your group for a late afternoon shuttle transfer back to Nelson.

Option C: Forest, Swing-Bridge & Cleopatra’s Pool Walk (10.5 km, 4 hours – active, optional at no extra cost)

For a more challenging and rewarding walk, disembark at Medlands Beach after the cruise and set off on a spectacular self-guided hike to Anchorage Beach. Highlights include the panoramic South Head lookout, the iconic Falls River swing-bridge, and a detour to the enchanting Cleopatra’s Pool – a natural rock pool and waterfall nestled deep in the forest. After this scenic adventure, return to Nelson in the late afternoon.

Whichever experience you choose, today offers an unforgettable encounter with one of New Zealand’s most pristine and photogenic coastal landscapes.

Breakfast included

Day 14 : NELSON TO PUNAKAIKI – ALPINE LAKES, RIVER GORGES & WILD COASTLINES

Today’s journey weaves through some of the South Island’s most remote and untouched landscapes. Departing Nelson, you’ll travel through the spellbinding beauty of Nelson Lakes National Park, an alpine wilderness of towering peaks, beech forests, and glacially-carved lakes that mark the northern reaches of the Southern Alps.

Pause at the charming village of St. Arnaud, nestled on the shores of the serene Lake Rotoiti. Here, snow-dusted mountains reflect on the lake’s glassy surface, and the stillness is broken only by birdsong and the gentle lapping of water – a perfect spot to stretch your legs and breathe in the crisp alpine air.

Your route then follows the spectacular Buller River Gorge, one of New Zealand’s most scenic yet least-travelled drives. Originally forged by 19th-century gold prospectors, the road winds through dense forest and along the dramatic cliffs of the gorge, crossing the river on single-lane suspension bridges and offering glimpses into a wilderness rarely seen by mass tourism.

As you emerge from the forested interior, the road meets the wild West Coast, where the Tasman Sea crashes into ancient cliffs and mist swirls above stony beaches. Your destination is the tiny coastal settlement of Punakaiki, famed for its dramatic seascapes and the geological marvel of the Pancake Rocks – layered limestone stacks that resemble giant piles of pancakes, sculpted over millennia by wind and water.

Settle in this evening at the Scenic Hotel Punakaiki, perched just above the surf and offering front-row views of the coast’s untamed beauty – a place where the elements meet and nature puts on a show.

Breakfast included

Day 15 : PUNAKAIKI TO FOX GLACIER – COASTAL DRIVES, JADE TREASURES & ALPINE ICE

This morning, set off on a breathtaking journey along the acclaimed Great Coast Road, recently voted one of the top ten coastal drives in the world by Lonely Planet. With the Tasman Sea crashing on one side and the snow-capped Southern Alps rising on the other, this stretch of highway delivers a stunning contrast of ocean and mountains, rainforest and farmland.

Travel through character-filled historic gold rush towns before arriving in Hokitika, a coastal settlement known for its strong connection to pounamu (greenstone). Visit artisan galleries where local craftspeople carve intricate jewellery and artworks from this treasured stone, which holds deep cultural significance in Māori tradition.

Continue to the vivid Hokitika Gorge, where a short scenic walk rewards you with views of striking blue-green glacial waters flowing between sheer granite cliffs, framed by lush native bush. It's a spectacular photo opportunity and a refreshing break in the journey south.

As the drive unfolds, the landscape becomes increasingly dramatic. Lush rainforest clings to the hillsides, and clearings reveal views of distant peaks. Pass through the glacier township of Franz Josef before reaching the quiet and remote village of Fox Glacier, nestled near the base of the mighty Southern Alps.

Here, two of New Zealand’s most remarkable natural wonders await – the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. These immense rivers of ice spill down from high alpine basins, descending through temperate rainforest almost to sea level – one of the only places on earth where glaciers meet rainforest.

For an unforgettable perspective, you may wish to take an optional helicopter flight with a snow landing (optional at extra cost). Weather permitting, this exhilarating experience offers bird’s-eye views of crevasses, icefalls, and the vast, untouched snowfields of the Southern Alps – an awe-inspiring highlight of your South Island adventure.

Tonight, rest at the elegant Te Weheka Retreat in Fox Glacier – a warm and welcoming base surrounded by alpine tranquillity.

Breakfast included

Day 16 : FOX GLACIER TO WāNAKA – MIRROR LAKES & MOUNTAIN PASSES

Begin your day with a gentle stroll around the stunning Lake Matheson, just a short drive from Fox Glacier. Known as the mirror lake, its still, dark waters perfectly reflect the snow-draped peaks of Mount Cook and Mount Tasman when conditions are calm – a moment of pure tranquillity and a photographer’s dream. Surrounded by native forest and birdsong, this serene start sets the tone for an unforgettable day of scenic discovery.

Departing Fox Glacier, journey south and inland along the winding road that follows the glacier-fed Haast River, carving its way through rugged valleys and alpine rainforest. Cross the majestic Haast Pass, gateway to the magnificent Mount Aspiring National Park, where waterfalls tumble down fern-fringed cliffs and the mountain air is crisp and invigorating.

The atmosphere softens as you emerge into the golden light of Central Otago, and the landscape opens to reveal the sparkling waters of Lake Wānaka. Framed by snow-capped peaks and rolling hills, this tranquil alpine lake is a beloved retreat for nature lovers, artists, and adventurers alike.

Arrive in the picturesque resort town of Wānaka, where cafés spill onto sunlit pavements, and the laid-back charm invites you to slow down and take it all in. With the majestic mountains reflected in the lake’s surface and a backdrop of year-round natural beauty, Wānaka offers the perfect blend of serenity and sophistication.

Your accommodation tonight is the elegant Edgewater Resort, nestled right on the lakefront – an idyllic spot to watch the sunset and reflect on the incredible journey so far.

Breakfast included

Day 17 : WāNAKA – ISLAND ECHOES, ALPINE FARMS & SCENIC SERENITY

Wake up to the peaceful beauty of Lake Wānaka, where mirrored waters meet rugged peaks and adventure meets tranquillity. This morning, choose between two remarkable experiences that offer different perspectives of this stunning region – one by boat and foot through pristine island wilderness, the other by 4WD through high-country farmland rich in heritage and mountain grandeur.

Option A: Mou Waho Island Eco Walk (optional at no extra cost)

Board a scenic boat and cruise across Lake Wānaka to Mou Waho Island – a predator-free sanctuary accessible only by water. Led by a passionate local eco-guide, you’ll disembark and follow a trail that winds upward through native bush alive with the sound of birdsong. As you climb, keep your eyes open for the rare Buff Weka – a flightless bird extinct on mainland New Zealand since 1920, but thriving here.

At the top lies the island’s best-kept secret – a lake on top of an island, in a lake, on an island! Known as Arethusa Pool, this surreal, photogenic landscape offers breathtaking 360-degree views over Lake Wānaka and the surrounding mountains. The chorus of native birds echoing through the bush adds a magical touch to this one-of-a-kind excursion.

Option B: 4WD High Country Farm Safari (optional at no extra cost)

Discover the soul of the South Island on New Zealand’s most authentic 4WD backcountry adventure. Venture into the untamed beauty of a real working High Country farm, where you’ll navigate remote tracks that overlook sparkling Lake Wānaka, glacier-fed valleys, and rugged alpine meadows.

Encounter Red Deer, sheep and cattle roaming the land, and gain insight into traditional and modern farming life in this challenging yet breathtaking terrain. Visit historical relics from Wānaka’s pioneering past, and enjoy short optional walks through untouched alpine wilderness and ancient forest. It’s a journey of wild scenery, authentic stories, and unmatched New Zealand hospitality.

This afternoon is yours to spend as you please – relax lakeside, browse Wānaka’s artisan shops and cafés, or perhaps take part in one of the many adventure activities the town is known for, from kayaking to scenic flights over the Southern Alps.

Breakfast included

Day 18 : WāNAKA TO TE ANAU – ALPINE PASSES, GOLD RUSH TOWNS & GLACIAL VALLEYS

Depart the lakeside tranquillity of Wānaka this morning and set out on a scenic drive brimming with alpine vistas and historic charm. Your first stop is the legendary Cardrona Hotel, one of New Zealand’s most photographed buildings. This rustic gold rush-era pub, with its weathered façade and alpine backdrop, offers a picture-perfect glimpse into the country’s pioneering past.

Ascend the winding Crown Range Road – the highest main road in New Zealand – and pause for panoramic views over the Wānaka basin and rugged Southern Alps. Then descend into the postcard-pretty settlement of Arrowtown, a lovingly preserved gold mining village nestled beneath the peaks that flank the glistening Arrow River. Stroll along the tree-lined main street, browse artisan boutiques, or explore remnants of the 1860s Chinese miner settlement tucked along the riverbank.

From Arrowtown, continue your journey south alongside the dramatic Remarkables mountain range and along the shores of Lake Wakatipu, one of the most photogenic drives on the South Island. Towering peaks rise to your left, while the deep blue waters stretch endlessly to your right, creating a journey as memorable as the destinations themselves.

Soon the scenery opens into a broad, glacially carved valley now home to fertile farmland, where grazing sheep dot the landscape and snow-capped peaks still dominate the horizon. Your destination is the peaceful lakeside town of Te Anau, nestled on the edge of Lake Te Anau – the largest (by volume) freshwater lake in the South Island and the gateway to the majestic Fiordland National Park.

Tonight’s accommodation is at the welcoming Distinction Hotel Luxmore, ideally positioned for tomorrow’s journey into one of New Zealand’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders – Milford Sound.

Breakfast included

Day 19 : TE ANAU TO MILFORD SOUND TO QUEENSTOWN – THE EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD

Today promises to be one of the most awe-inspiring highlights of your entire journey. Depart Te Anau early and travel deep into the heart of Fiordland National Park, a UNESCO-listed treasure and one of the last true wilderness areas in the Southern Hemisphere. The road to Milford Sound is a journey through time and geology – where ancient glaciers have sculpted valleys, sheer cliffs rise from dense rainforest, and waterfalls cascade down fern-fringed rock faces.

Travel through the ethereal Eglington Valley, past mirror-like alpine lakes, and into the dramatic Cleddau Gorge, before plunging into the tunnel carved through solid rock known as the Homer Tunnel – your gateway to one of the most iconic landscapes on earth.

Described by Rudyard Kipling as the “eighth wonder of the world”, Milford Sound is truly breath-taking in any weather. Towering Mitre Peak rises dramatically from the still, dark waters of the fiord, and the sheer rock faces surrounding you create a cathedral-like atmosphere of silence and grandeur.

Board a comfortable cruise vessel for a journey through the sound, gliding past plunging waterfalls, steep cliffs, and rainforest-clad ridgelines all the way to the Tasman Sea. Keep an eye out for native wildlife – playful New Zealand fur seals sunning themselves on rocks, pods of dusky dolphins, and even the occasional penguin.

Lunch is included aboard the cruise, served as you take in the ever-changing vistas of one of nature’s grandest theatres.

After the cruise, retrace your steps back through this spectacular alpine environment and across the rolling Southland farmland, before skirting the edge of the stunning Lake Wakatipu en route to Queenstown – New Zealand’s adventure capital and your base for the next two nights.

Your accommodation this evening is at the stylish Scenic Suites Queenstown, perfectly situated for exploring this lively resort town nestled between mountains and lake.

Breakfast included | Lunch included

Day 20 : QUEENSTOWN – ADVENTURE, SCENERY & RELAXATION AT YOUR PAC

Welcome to Queenstown, a vibrant alpine resort nestled between the **majestic peaks** of the Remarkables and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Wakatipu. With a dynamic blend of natural beauty, thrill-seeking adventures, and tranquil escapes, today is yours to experience Queenstown your way.

Whether you're chasing an adrenaline rush or looking for laid-back luxury, there’s something here for every traveller. For the adventurous, you might choose to soar through the treetops on a zip-line at Bob’s Peak, tackle the white-knuckle Shotover Jet-boat ride, or brave the rapids on an exhilarating white-water rafting trip (all optional at extra cost).

Prefer a slower pace? Take the Skyline Gondola up to Bob’s Peak for jaw-dropping panoramic views over Queenstown and Lake Wakatipu, or venture on a 4WD safari through Skippers Canyon – an off-road journey through gold-rush history and dramatic alpine landscapes.

If food and wine are more your style, Queenstown is home to charming boutique wineries, artisan producers, and vibrant cafés where you can sample the best of Otago’s culinary scene. Or simply unwind in one of the region’s many tranquil lakeside gardens.

For a timeless and elegant experience, step aboard the iconic TSS Earnslaw – a vintage steamship still operating today. Cruise across Lake Wakatipu to the historic Walter Peak High Country Farm, where you can explore the station grounds, meet farm animals, and enjoy traditional Kiwi hospitality (optional at extra cost).

With so many ways to enjoy Queenstown, today is yours to relax, explore, or thrill-seek at your own pace before returning to your lakeside haven at the Scenic Suites Queenstown.

Breakfast included

Day 21 : QUEENSTOWN TO MT. COOK TO TWIZEL – ALPINE LANDSCAPES & GLACIAL LAKES

Leave behind the buzz of Queenstown this morning as you journey north through the rugged and dramatic Kawarau Gorge, where steep canyon walls and tumbling rivers mark the gateway to Central Otago. Pass the shimmering waters of Lake Dunstan and travel across the wide-open plains of the region’s distinctive golden countryside, where orchards and vineyards sit against a backdrop of barren hills.

Ascend the winding road over the remote Lindis Pass, surrounded by tussock-covered highlands that evoke a sense of isolation and grandeur. As you descend into the vast Mackenzie Basin, the scenery transforms into an expansive high-country landscape dominated by the snow-capped peaks of the Southern Alps.

Skirting the shores of the brilliant blue Lake Pukaki, take in one of the most iconic views in New Zealand – the long straight road leading towards the mighty Aoraki/Mt. Cook, the country’s tallest peak at 3,724 metres. On a clear day, the mountain seems to rise straight out of the lake, creating a picture-perfect moment framed by glacial waters and alpine silence.

Travel into Mt. Cook Village, nestled at the foot of the mountain and surrounded by alpine trails, glacial valleys, and a sense of untouched wilderness. There’s time here to soak up the scenery, take a short walk, or visit the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre (optional at extra cost), dedicated to the legendary mountaineer who trained here for his Everest ascent.

This evening, continue to the peaceful town of Twizel, set amid the open landscapes of the Mackenzie Country. Your overnight stay is at the welcoming Distinction Mackenzie Country Hotel, surrounded by mountain vistas and starlit skies – a true alpine escape.

Breakfast included

Day 22 : TWIZEL TO CHRISTCHURCH – LAKESIDE TRADITIONS & GARDEN CITY RENEWAL

This morning, journey through the heart of the Mackenzie high country to the breathtaking shores of Lake Tekapo, one of New Zealand’s most photographed alpine lakes, renowned for its vivid turquoise waters and dramatic mountain backdrop.

Here, you’ll be welcomed into a local home perched beside the lake, where you’ll learn the sweet secrets of a true Kiwi classic – the Pavlova. Discover the techniques behind this iconic meringue-based dessert, then enjoy your freshly prepared treat with a cup of tea or coffee while soaking in the sweeping lake and alpine views – a uniquely personal and memorable experience.

After morning tea, visit the beloved Church of the Good Shepherd. This tiny stone chapel stands in quiet harmony with its majestic surroundings, with a window at the altar framing an unforgettable view of the Southern Alps. A favourite of photographers and travellers alike, it’s a serene symbol of the region’s natural and spiritual beauty.

Continue your journey across the golden tussock plains of the high country, passing through the friendly rural towns of Fairlie and Geraldine, and onward to the agricultural heartland of Ashburton. Along the way, glimpse the ever-changing rural landscapes that define this region – from sheep-dotted paddocks to fertile crop fields framed by distant peaks.

Your destination is Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island and often called the “most English” of New Zealand’s cities. Having endured devastating earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, Christchurch has re-emerged with a renewed spirit. Today, it blends urban regeneration, creative innovation, and restored heritage in a captivating mix of old and new. From the tranquil Avon River and leafy parks to cutting-edge architecture and vibrant street art, Christchurch is a city redefining itself with grace and resilience.

This evening, check into the centrally located Distinction Hotel Christchurch, your base for the final night of this remarkable journey across Aotearoa.

Breakfast included

Day 23 : CHRISTCHURCH – TRANQUIL MOMENTS & FAREWELL CELEBRATION

On your final day in New Zealand, take time to reflect on the incredible landscapes, cultures, and connections you've experienced as you enjoy the relaxed elegance of Christchurch – a city of resilience, beauty, and quiet charm.

Begin the day with a peaceful experience that harks back to a gentler time. Dressed in traditional Edwardian attire, your skilled punting boatman will guide you along the tranquil Avon River in a classic flat-bottomed punt. Glide past sculpted gardens, weeping willows, and the serene Christchurch Botanic Gardens, a treasured green space in the heart of the city. The soft sound of the water and the timeless setting make this a truly idyllic experience.

Then step aboard a beautifully restored heritage tram for a charming ride through Christchurch’s revitalised city centre. As the tram gently clatters along its tracks, take in the fascinating blend of heritage architecture, urban regeneration, and vibrant street life that defines this ever-evolving city.

This evening, gather one last time with your fellow travellers for a relaxed and celebratory farewell dinner at a local restaurant. Share stories, raise a glass to new friendships, and toast the unforgettable journey you’ve shared through the diverse and dazzling landscapes of Aotearoa – from glacial valleys and golden beaches to Māori traditions and alpine wonders.
