Day 2 : CAHUITA NATIONAL PARK - COASTAL RAINFOREST & CARIBBEAN REEF EXPERIENCE
This morning, wake to the gentle rhythm of the Caribbean Sea and the distant calls of tropical birds hidden within the palms. After breakfast, you will set out for a guided exploration of Cahuita National Park, one of the most scenic and wildlife-rich coastal reserves in Costa Rica. Located just a short drive from Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, this protected area uniquely combines white-sand beaches, dense coastal rainforest and vibrant coral reefs.
Accompanied by an experienced naturalist guide, you will follow flat, shaded coastal trails at a relaxed and unhurried pace. The walking here is gentle and well-suited to travellers who prefer observation over exertion. As you move through the forest, your guide will help you spot wildlife often missed by the untrained eye — including two-toed and three-toed sloths resting high in the canopy, white-faced capuchin monkeys moving through the treetops, raccoons near the shoreline and iguanas basking in filtered sunlight.
Birdlife is particularly abundant. Look out for keel-billed toucans, herons, kingfishers and the occasional flash of a scarlet macaw. The coastal setting makes this one of the most photogenic national parks in the country, where rainforest meets turquoise sea in dramatic contrast.
Later in the morning, enjoy time for snorkelling in the Caribbean waters (weather and sea conditions permitting). The reef at Cahuita is one of the most important on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, home to colourful tropical fish, sea fans and coral formations. Waters here are typically calmer than on the Pacific side, making it a comfortable and accessible snorkelling experience. Participation is entirely optional — those who prefer may simply relax on the beach and enjoy the coastal scenery.
Return to Puerto Viejo in the early afternoon. The remainder of the day is free to unwind. You may wish to relax by the pool, take a gentle beach walk, or explore the town’s vibrant Caribbean culture — a blend of Costa Rican and Afro-Caribbean influences reflected in its cuisine, music and laid-back atmosphere.
