A compact northern-circuit adventure blending culture, scenery and big-game drama. Begin in Arusha, Tanzania’s lively safari hub, with time to settle in before a forested day-hike on Mount Kilimanjaro (Mandara area) and an optional foray into Arusha National Park.

Venture to the Chagga highlands for Materuni Waterfalls and a hands-on coffee experience—song, roast, grind, brew—set against Kilimanjaro’s montane slopes. Then roll south to elephant-rich Tarangire National Park, where baobab plains, marshes and the life-giving Tarangire River promise classic game viewing.

Continue to the storied Serengeti, trading woodlands for endless short-grass and kopjes. A full day on the tracks pursues lions, cheetahs and—season permitting—the movements of vast wildebeest and zebra herds. For an elevated perspective, add an optional sunrise hot-air balloon.

Descend into the wildlife-packed bowl of the Ngorongoro Crater for concentrated sightings across lakes, grasslands and fever-tree groves, then meet growers and market traders in Mto wa Mbu before returning to Arusha. Throughout: guided 4×4 game drives, thoughtful pacing, comfortable stays and the small touches—picnic spots, golden-hour photo stops, village flavours—that turn an itinerary into a journey.

Day 1 : DEPART NEW YORK ✈ KILIMANJARO (JRO)

Your East Africa adventure begins at NEW YORK. Breeze through check-in, steal a quiet coffee, and feel the anticipation build as you wander to departures—maps saved offline, playlists downloaded, camera charged. At the gate the aircraft waits beneath glass and steel; once onboard, settle by the window, watch the city lights slip away, and let the long-haul rhythm carry you overnight towards Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).

Flight notes

• Typical routing: one-stop long-haul to JRO (some dates may offer same-day or non-stop options at extra cost).
• Arrive at LHR 3 hours before departure; verify final timings in your e-ticket and airline app.
• Keep power banks, prescribed medication, valuables and a spare layer in your carry-on. Liquids over 100 ml belong in checked baggage under UK/EU security rules.

Travel documents & baggage

• Ensure your passport validity meets Tanzania entry rules and that you hold the correct visa/e-Visa for your nationality.
• Check your airline’s baggage allowance (checked & cabin) and any fees for seat selection or sports equipment.
• Keep printed/digital copies of key documents and your first-night hotel details for immigration.

Health & comfort

• Hydrate, choose a light pre-flight meal, and walk the aisle every couple of hours on this overnight long-haul.
• A neck pillow, eye mask and earplugs can transform rest time.
• On descent, set watches to EAT (UTC+3).

Power & plugs

Tanzania uses Type D/G sockets; voltage 230V, 50Hz. Pack a universal adaptor.

On arrival at JRO, clear formalities and meet your pre-arranged transfer in the arrivals hall for a smooth ride to your lodge/hotel—welcome to Tanzania.

Day 2 : KILIMANJARO ➜ ARUSHA

Touch down at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and step into the clear mountain air with Mount Meru on the horizon. Meet your driver and travel by private/shared vehicle to Arusha—about 55 km, typically one hour—watching smallhold farms, acacia-dotted plains and lively roadside stalls slide by.

After check-in, the rest of the day is yours. Ease into Tanzania at your own pace: take a gentle stroll in the neighbourhood, enjoy a swim if your hotel has a pool, or sip a cool drink while the afternoon light softens over the gardens. As evening draws in, sit down to dinner and meet your tour guide for a relaxed briefing—routes, wildlife highlights and what to expect on your upcoming safari.

Good to know: Early check-in may be arranged at additional cost if you’d like immediate room access on arrival (subject to availability).

Overnight: Arusha (hotel).

Day 3 : ARUSHA ↺ MOUNT KILIMANJARO NATIONAL PARK (MARANGU) ↺ ARUSHA

After an early breakfast, depart around 06:00 with a packed lunch for the drive to Marangu Gate (≈1,860 m). Complete the park entry formalities, meet your mountain guide, and step beneath the rainforest canopy: giant ferns, moss-draped trunks and the steady riffle of a stream set the rhythm as the trail begins to climb.

The path rises steadily for 3–4 hours (pace-dependent) to Mandara Hut at ≈2,700 m. From here, a short spur leads to the rim of the Maundi Crater—a small volcanic cone that, on clear days, frames sweeping views toward Mawenzi and Kibo. Break for your picnic, breathe the cool mountain air, and soak up the upper forest’s hush before starting your descent.

Trail Facts

• Route: Marangu GateMandara Hut → return.
• Distance/effort: approx. 17 km round-trip; ~800 m total ascent.
• Hiking times: ascent 3–4 hrs; descent ~1–2 hrs (group pace/weather dependent).

Safety & Gear

• Wear sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing and a light rain shell (showers possible in the forest).
• Carry 1–2 L water, hat, sunscreen and snacks alongside your packed lunch.
• Trekking poles can be pre-reserved (payable locally).
• Not recommended for young children or travellers with reduced mobility.

Good to Know

• Starting elevation near the gate is ≈1,860–1,880 m; expect cooler temperatures as you gain height.
• Weather shifts quickly—your guide may adjust the Maundi Crater spur for safety/visibility.
• Park rules require staying on marked trails and following guide instructions at all times.

Descend to Marangu Gate, meet your vehicle and return to Arusha. Evening to unwind—dinner and overnight at your hotel after a rewarding day on Africa’s highest mountain.

Overnight: Arusha (hotel).

Day 4 : ARUSHA • DAY AT LEISURE OR ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK (OPTIONAL)

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel, then set the pace for a free day in Arusha—browse craft markets, sample fresh-roasted coffee or simply unwind by the pool. Alternatively, add an optional day exploring Arusha National Park, a compact reserve rich in scenery and wildlife.

Important: The Arusha National Park excursion is optional, at additional cost and subject to availability/park conditions.

Optional — Arusha National Park Day Experience

Morning pick-up from your lodge and drive to the park for entry formalities. Begin with a guided nature walk in the lush montane forest—listen for turacos and trogons, and watch for blue monkeys and striking black-and-white colobus. Continue by 4×4 on a relaxed game drive across the park’s three contrasting areas: the Ngurdoto Crater, the Momella Lakes (often with flamingos) and the slopes of Mount Meru. Sightings commonly include giraffe and buffalo, with wide horizons and forested ravines offering superb photo stops. A picnic lunch is enjoyed at a scenic site before an afternoon loop and return to Arusha.

What you may see: Giraffe, buffalo, bushbuck, colobus and blue monkeys; waterbirds on the Momella Lakes; forest and crater vistas with Mount Meru as a backdrop (wildlife varies by season/time).

Practical: Wear comfortable walking shoes and light layers; bring sun protection, a hat and a light rain shell. Binoculars recommended. Park rules require staying with your guide and remaining on designated routes.

Dinner at the hotel and overnight in Arusha.

Day 5 : ARUSHA ↺ MATERUNI WATERFALLS & COFFEE EXPERIENCE ↺ ARUSHA

After breakfast, set out for Materuni, a traditional Chagga village tucked on the verdant lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro (≈83 km / ~2.5 hrs each way, road and weather permitting). On arrival, follow your local guide along a scenic footpath—about 40 minutes—through gardens and montane forest toward the thrum of the Materuni Waterfall.

The cascade plunges roughly 80 metres into an emerald pool, mist curling over ferns and mossy rock. Pause for photos and, if conditions allow, enjoy a refreshing swim at the base. Along the way, hear stories of Chagga daily life, traditional crops and the plants that thrive in this fertile belt around Kilimanjaro.

Village Coffee Experience

Visit a smallholder coffee plot to learn the journey from cherry to cup—pulping, drying, roasting and hand-grinding. Join in with rhythmic songs as beans are pounded, then brew and taste your own fresh cup. A hearty home-style Chagga lunch is included; you may be offered local specialities such as ndizi (banana dishes) and, season permitting, a sip of traditional banana beer.

Optional — Maasai Cultural Experience

If you’d like to extend the day, add a late-afternoon Maasai cultural visit (pre-bookable, extra cost). Travel to the savannah fringe for a hosted introduction to Maasai traditions, song and dance, and a guided walk around a manyatta (homestead). With clear weather, sunsets can reveal dramatic views toward Kilimanjaro and the wider steppe.

Practical Notes

• Footpath can be muddy/slippery; wear sturdy walking shoes or light boots.
• Bring a swimsuit, small towel, light rain shell and mosquito repellent.
• Walking sticks can be arranged in advance (subject to availability, local fee).
• Not advised for travellers with reduced mobility; pace and route may vary with weather.

Return to Arusha by late afternoon. Evening at leisure followed by dinner and overnight at your hotel.

Day 6 : ARUSHA ➜ TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, bid farewell to Arusha and drive south-west to Tarangire National Park (≈2.5–3 hrs, road/traffic dependent). Switch to a custom 4×4 and set off on a full-day game drive across rolling savannah studded with ancient baobab trees. Tarangire is famed for its substantial elephant herds and superb general wildlife—zebra, wildebeest, buffalo and predators move between woodlands and wide, shimmering marshes.

Lifeblood of the ecosystem, the Tarangire River draws animals from far and wide in the dry months, concentrating sightings along its bends and sandy banks. Expect classic East African vistas, dramatic skies and long lenses working overtime. A packed picnic lunch is included and enjoyed at a designated site within the park.

What you might see

Large elephant families, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, bat-eared fox, fringe-eared oryx (seasonal), and prolific birdlife along the marshes. Predator encounters (lion/leopard) are possible—nature is unscripted.

Practical notes

• Bring a light jacket for the cool morning, hat and sunscreen for midday heat.
• Dust can be prevalent—consider a buff/scarf for comfort and a lens cloth for cameras.
• Binoculars elevate the experience; always follow your guide’s wildlife-distance etiquette.

By late afternoon, exit the game circuits and transfer to your Tarangire area accommodation. Evening at leisure, followed by dinner and overnight in the park vicinity.

Day 7 : TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK ➜ SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

After breakfast, set out across the Great Rift Valley landscapes toward the legendary Serengeti. The drive (≈190 km / ~3.5 hrs, route and track conditions permitting) trades Tarangire’s baobab-studded plains for sweeping grasslands, scattered kopjes and wide skies that seem to run forever.

En route — What to watch for

• Changing habitats from wooded savannah to classic short-grass plains.
• Occasional herds of zebra, wildebeest and giraffe along the corridor.
• Iconic granite kopjes (lion lookouts) and far-flung horizons tailor-made for photography.

On arrival, complete park formalities, check in and take time to unwind. Enjoy a relaxed lunch, freshen up, and savour the anticipation—tomorrow is a full day devoted to game driving on one of Africa’s greatest wildlife stages.

Practical notes

• Roads can be dusty and occasionally corrugated—keep a scarf/buff and lens cloth handy.
• Carry water, hat and sunscreen for the journey; wildlife is wild—sightings vary by season and time.
• Optional cultural or museum stops en route (e.g., Olduvai Gorge) may be possible at extra cost and time permitting.

Evening at leisure followed by dinner and overnight in the Serengeti.

Day 8 : SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Dawn paints the endless plains gold as the Serengeti wakes—distant whoops of hyena, the chatter of weavers in acacias, a blush of light over scattered kopjes. Savour an unhurried breakfast or, for a truly elevated start, lift off on an optional hot-air balloon at first light and watch the savannah unfold below.

Optional — Hot-Air Balloon Safari

Glide above the plains at sunrise for sweeping views of wildlife corridors and meandering watercourses. Touch down for a celebratory refreshment before rejoining the day’s game drive. Weather-dependent; confirmation is typically given the day prior. Not suitable for children under 5 or for travellers requiring a wheelchair.

Mid-morning, head out in a custom 4×4 for an unbroken day on the tracks. Your guide will work the valleys, riverlines and open short-grass to find the action—elephant families in the shade, lion draped on granite, alert cheetah scanning the horizon, and great skeins of wildebeest and zebra when the movements are in. Lunch can be taken as a picnic in the bush or at your base, depending on the day’s sightings and group preference.

What you might see

Lion, cheetah, elephant, hippo pools, plains game in their thousands, and prolific birdlife—from kori bustards to lilac-breasted rollers. Nature is unscripted; every circuit writes its own story.

Practical notes

• Early starts maximise cool-hour activity—bring a light layer that packs away by midday.
• Sun protection, water and a soft scarf/buff are useful for open-window viewing.
• Follow your guide’s wildlife-distance and no-standing rules for safety and animal welfare.

Return before dusk to your Serengeti base for dinner and overnight, the sky deepening to a field of stars and the bush choir beginning anew.

Day 9 : SERENGETI ➜ NGORONGORO CRATER ➜ KARATU

After breakfast, bid the Serengeti’s wide horizons farewell and travel southeast toward the rim of the legendary Ngorongoro Crater (≈145 km / ~3.5 hrs, road and wildlife-stop dependent). Cool air and misted forest herald the highlands as you approach one of Africa’s greatest natural theatres.

Complete park formalities, then descend the steep, forested slope to the crater floor. The landscape opens into a mosaic of open savannah, mature woodland and a permanent alkaline lake, all ringed by towering walls rising more than 600 m. Keep eyes peeled in the descent forest for bright turacos and other highland birdlife before the plain reveals large gatherings of herbivores—zebra, wildebeest, buffalo—and their attending predators.

Crater Highlights

• Vast enclosed ecosystem ~260 km² with exceptional wildlife density.
• Frequent sightings of lion, hyena, elephant bulls, hippo pools, and abundant plains game.
• Seasonal flocks and waders along the lake’s shore; raptors cruising the thermals.

Day Rhythm

Break midday for a packed picnic lunch at a designated site before continuing game-viewing across the grasslands and marshy glades. Your guide will plan routes to make the most of visibility and wildlife activity within the permitted crater time.

Practical Notes

• Mornings can be cool on the rim—carry a light layer; dust on the floor can pick up by afternoon.
• Always remain in/near the vehicle except at marked sites and follow wildlife-distance guidance.
• Binoculars and a lens cloth enhance viewing and photography.

In the late afternoon, ascend the rim and continue to Karatu (≈45 km / ~1.5 hrs). Settle in for the evening—dinner and overnight in the Karatu area.

Day 10 : KARATU ➜ MTO WA MBU (CULTURE & MARKETS) ➜ ARUSHA

After breakfast, travel south to the lively village of Mto wa Mbu on the approach to Lake Manyara National Park (≈28 km / ~35 mins). This fertile Rift Valley pocket is famed for its small banana groves, paddy fields, and a mosaic of produce farms fed by underground springs.

With your local guide, wander through the food market—mounds of red chillies, pyramids of tomatoes, fragrant spices—and then along village lanes to meet growers and artisans. Visit a simple banana-beer stop to learn how the brew is made and sample regional varieties. A tasty lunch is included, showcasing fresh valley ingredients and classic Swahili flavours.

Cultural Touchpoints

• Meet smallholder farmers and fruit sellers; learn about spring-fed irrigation.
• Sample local bananas (dessert & cooking types) and seasonal fruits.
• Optional craft browsing—woodcarvings and woven goods support village livelihoods.

Practical Notes

• Wear comfortable walking shoes, light clothing and a hat; carry water and sunscreen.
• Always ask before photographing people or private property; small purchases are appreciated.
• Return drive to Arusha: ≈113 km / just under 2 hours (traffic/road dependent).

Arrive in Arusha by late afternoon. Evening at leisure, followed by dinner and overnight.

Day 11 : ARUSHA ➜ KILIMANJARO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (JRO) • DEPARTURE

Enjoy breakfast* at your accommodation, then meet your driver at the indicated time** for the road transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport (≈55 km / ~1 hour, traffic and road conditions permitting). As you leave the highland coffee slopes behind, take a last look at the Rift Valley vistas and reflect on your northern Tanzania adventure.

Departure Notes

• Please have your passport, e-ticket and any visa/health documents ready for check-in.
• Airlines recommend arriving at JRO at least 3 hours before an international flight.
