Day 7 : FROM BLACK SANDS TO RED SHORES – SANTIAGO ISLAND & RáBIDA’S FLAMINGO LAGOON
Another day in the Galápagos Islands brings another unforgettable chapter in your journey through Earth’s living museum. This morning, you’ll arrive at the rugged western coast of Santiago Island, where your adventure begins at the atmospheric Egas Port, famous for its striking black sand beach and fascinating blend of natural and human history.
As you stroll along the coastline of this volcanic shoreline, your guide will share stories of past settlements and one man’s ambitious—but ultimately doomed—attempt to exploit the island’s natural salt deposits. Beyond the human tales, this dramatic stretch of coast is alive with wildlife. Look out for Galápagos fur seals resting in lava grottoes, sally lightfoot crabs scuttling across black rocks, and a variety of shorebirds wading in the surf.
In the afternoon, your vessel navigates southeast to the surreal and vividly coloured Rábida Island, one of the most visually unique stops in the archipelago. As you land on the island’s signature red sand beach, you’ll be struck by the landscape’s rich, rust-hued tones—a result of the oxidised volcanic material reacting over time with rain, sea spray, and salt-laden winds. It’s a photographer’s paradise and a rare geological marvel.
A short, scenic walk leads you from the beach to a coastal lagoon, where birdlife flourishes. This is a prime location for spotting iconic land birds, such as Darwin’s finches, Galápagos doves, yellow warblers, and mockingbirds. If conditions are right, you might be rewarded with a sighting of the island’s elegant flamingos, their pink feathers glowing in stark contrast to the crimson terrain.
Whether birdwatching along the lagoon, soaking in the stark beauty of red volcanic cliffs, or snorkelling in the surrounding waters with sea lions and vibrant marine life, today offers an immersive experience in the geological and biological diversity that defines the Galápagos Islands.
Return to the Yolita II for another relaxing evening at sea, sharing stories with fellow travellers and gazing at the star-filled equatorial skies above.
