Day 9 : IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ARIKI HOTU MATUA – EXPLORE THE SACRED SITES OF EASTER ISLAND

Day 9: In the Footsteps of Ariki Hotu Matua – Explore the Sacred Sites of Easter Island

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before setting out on a remarkable full-day tour across the mystical landscapes of Easter Island (Rapa Nui). Today’s journey retraces the legendary path of the island’s first king, Ariki Hotu Matua, and immerses you in the heart of the island’s ancestral heritage.

Your first stop is Akahanga, one of the island’s sacred platforms where toppled moai lie undisturbed, surrounded by remnants of ancient dwellings and ceremonial structures. Continue to Ahu Akahanga, home to a long platform that once held 12 moai statues and an unrestored Rapa Nui village that offers a raw glimpse into the past.

Next, explore Vaihu, a reconstructed interpretive village where you’ll discover traditional earth ovens, stone chicken coops, and elliptical houses built from ancient techniques — a living museum of Rapa Nui’s cultural ingenuity.

The tour then continues to the iconic Ahu Tongariki, the island’s most famous and visually striking site. Here, 15 colossal moai stand majestically in a row, dramatically set against the backdrop of the Pacific Ocean — a powerful reminder of the island’s ceremonial and spiritual history.

Afterwards, arrive at the slopes of Rano Raraku, a volcanic quarry where the moai were sculpted. Hike through this hauntingly beautiful site, where over 400 unfinished statues remain frozen in time, some half-buried in the earth, others still emerging from the bedrock. Walking among these silent giants offers a moving, almost spiritual experience.

Your journey ends at the serene Anakena Beach, where legend holds that King Hotu Matua first set foot on Easter Island. Relax on the soft white sands, swim in the crystal-clear waters, or simply enjoy the magical setting surrounded by coconut palms and watching moai overlooking the shore.

Day 10 : SACRED RITUALS & SUNSET VIEWS – VOLCANIC MAJESTY AND RAPA NUI LEGENDS

Day 10: Sacred Rituals & Sunset Views – Volcanic Majesty and Rapa Nui Legends

After breakfast at the hotel, set out for another fascinating journey through Easter Island’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage. Your first stop is Ahu Vinapu, where you’ll find the mysterious Ahu Tahira wall. Constructed with precision-cut stonework that bears a striking resemblance to Incan masonry, this archaeological site sparks intriguing theories of ancient trans-Pacific connections. Also present is a unique red scoria moai believed by some to depict a two-headed female figure — a rare and puzzling relic unlike any other on the island.

Next, ascend to the summit of Rano Kau Volcano, a spectacular natural amphitheatre and home to the island’s largest crater. From the rim, take in breathtaking panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the island’s rugged coastline. With its circular blue lagoon and lush interior, this extinct volcano offers one of the most majestic outlooks in all of Rapa Nui — a place that truly feels like the edge of the world.

Continue to the nearby ceremonial village of Orongo, perched dramatically on the crater’s edge. Here, delve into the fascinating history of the ancient Birdman Competition (Tangata Manu), a spiritual contest that took place until the mid-19th century. Learn how competitors scaled the cliffs and swam to the islet of Motu Nui in search of the sacred egg of the Manutara bird — a ritual that once determined leadership on the island.

Later, return to town and enjoy a tranquil evening. As the day draws to a close, choose your spot to witness a magical sunset over the Pacific — whether in front of the moai at Ahu Tahai or along the coast. The play of golden light over these ancient statues creates an unforgettable scene, rich in atmosphere and reverence.
