Nestled along the equator in a highland valley at the foothills of the majestic Pichincha Volcano, Quito is often hailed as the **Cultural Capital of South America**.

Depending on your arrival time, you may wish to begin your journey with a stroll through the enchanting streets of **Quito’s Old Town**, where cobblestone alleys, baroque churches, and colonial plazas transport you back in time. For those eager to dive deeper into the area’s beauty and history, optional guided day trips to nearby attractions can be arranged — please request this in advance through Lumle.

In the evening, enjoy some free time at your leisure to relax and soak in the city’s atmosphere — perhaps with a local meal or a gentle walk beneath the glow of historic lanterns. Today serves as a gentle introduction and an acclimatisation day before your adventure truly begins.

Afterwards, continue your journey into the Ecuadorian Highlands, passing through the windswept moorlands of Papallacta — the highest point of the route — before descending into the lush greenery of the Amazon jungle. By late afternoon, you’ll arrive at your Amazon Lodge, nestled deep within Ecuador’s eastern rainforest region.

As evening falls, embark on a magical walk through the Amazon gardens at night, where the rainforest comes alive with sound and movement. You may choose to spend the day exploring jungle trails, spotting unique flora and fauna, or visiting nearby communities for an insight into local culture. Alternatively, take this opportunity to simply relax and unwind in the peaceful surroundings, enjoying the comfort of the lodge’s amenities — whether it's a hammock in the garden, a refreshing dip in the pool, or a quiet moment with the sounds of the rainforest as your backdrop.

On the way, stop in the picturesque town of Papallacta, renowned for its natural thermal waters believed to have medicinal properties. Nestled high in the Andes, Papallacta is not only a place of relaxation but also a vital part of Ecuador’s ecosystem — its lagoon supplies most of Quito’s drinking water, and 80% of the area is protected moorland.

You’ll have time to admire the surrounding landscape and, should you wish, enjoy a rejuvenating soak in one of the area’s optional hot springs for an additional cost (approx. USD $10 per person). Afterward, continue on to Quito for check-in and a restful evening.

Day 13 : LIMA

After enjoying a delicious breakfast at the hotel, set off on a guided exploration of Lima’s historic old town, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This captivating area is brimming with majestic colonial architecture and echoes of Peru’s Spanish past.

Begin your journey at the Main Square (Plaza Mayor), where you'll admire the elegant façades of government buildings and the impressive Cathedral of Lima, an architectural masterpiece that anchors the city's colonial heart. Next, visit the Casa Aliaga, a rare gem of living history. This colonial mansion was gifted in 1535 by conquistador Francisco Pizarro to Jerónimo de Aliaga, and remarkably, it has remained in the same family for over 17 generations.

Continue to the renowned Larco Museum, situated in the charming district of Pueblo Libre. Housed in an exquisitely restored viceregal mansion built atop a 7th-century pre-Columbian pyramid, this museum showcases an extensive and well-curated collection of pre-Hispanic gold and silver artefacts. Don’t miss the museum’s intriguing gallery of erotic art, offering a unique glimpse into ancient Peruvian culture.

The rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore at your leisure. Perhaps relax at a local café, visit the nearby parks, or stroll through Lima’s vibrant districts soaking in the modern rhythms of the Peruvian capital.

Day 14 : LIMA - CUSCO BY FLIGHT

Take the rest of the day to relax or explore at your own pace. Cusco’s cobblestone streets, colonial façades, and vibrant local life offer a captivating first impression of the Andean highlands.

Overnight stay in Cusco.

Day 15 : CUSCO – SACRED VALLEY

Breakfast at the hotel. Begin your full-day cultural immersion as you are picked up from your hotel in Cusco and driven to the traditional Andean town of Chinchero. Perched at a high altitude with panoramic views of the Sacred Valley, Chinchero is a living testament to Inca heritage. The local community proudly preserves ancient artisan traditions, from colourful textiles to time-honoured customs. Visit the town’s archaeological remains and its stunning 17th-century colonial church, one of the oldest Catholic structures in Peru, built atop Inca foundations.

Next, continue to the Living Museum of Yucay, a fascinating centre for the interpretation of Andean traditions. Witness live demonstrations of ancient crafts such as textile weaving, pottery, adobe brick-making, and silverwork, all performed using traditional techniques. Get up close with resident llamas, alpacas, and sheep — and even have the chance to feed them!

Journey onward to the Inca town of Ollantaytambo, one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the Americas. Explore its labyrinthine cobbled streets and climb the iconic Ollantaytambo Fortress, a monumental complex clinging to the mountain slopes. This awe-inspiring site once served as a strategic military, religious, and agricultural centre during Inca times.

Later, indulge in a delicious lunch at a charming local restaurant in Ollantaytambo, where you’ll experience the warmth and flavours of authentic Andean gastronomy in an inviting setting that reflects the spirit of the Sacred Valley.

*If your visit falls on a Sunday, enjoy the vibrant and colourful Chinchero market, where locals gather to trade produce, textiles, and handicrafts in a bustling, traditional atmosphere.

Overnight stay in the Sacred Valley.

Day 16 : SACRED VALLEY - MACHU PICCHU - CUSCO

After breakfast at the hotel, begin an unforgettable journey as you make your way to Ollanta Station to board the scenic train to Aguas Calientes, the charming gateway to Machu Picchu. As the train winds through dramatic Andean landscapes, take in the breathtaking views of steep valleys, rushing rivers, and lush cloud forests that signal your approach to one of the world’s most legendary destinations.

Upon arrival in Aguas Calientes, continue your ascent with a 25-minute coach ride up the mountain to reach the “Lost City of the Incas”. Hidden for centuries in the misty highlands of Peru, Machu Picchu is believed to have been built in the 1450s by Emperor Pachacuti as a royal retreat. Miraculously untouched by the Spanish conquistadors, the site lay forgotten by the outside world until its dramatic rediscovery in 1911.

Enjoy a guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site and explore its most iconic landmarks: the Main Square, the Royal Quarters, the Temple of the Three Windows, the Circular Towers, the Sacred Sun Dial, and the mysterious Burial Grounds. With every stone and terrace, you’ll feel the spirit and ingenuity of the Inca civilisation echo through time.

After soaking in the magic of this sacred site, return to Aguas Calientes for lunch at the acclaimed Café Inkaterra—a serene, thatched-roof retreat nestled between the railway tracks and a forested mountainside, offering both rustic charm and culinary delights.

In the afternoon, journey back to Cusco by train, retracing the stunning route through the heart of the Andes.

Overnight stay in Cusco.

Day 17 : CUSCO DEPARTURE

After breakfast at the hotel, bid farewell to the majestic Andes as you enjoy a comfortable transfer to Cusco Airport for your onward journey. Take one last glimpse of this enchanting city nestled in the mountains—a place where ancient traditions and colonial charm continue to thrive side by side.
