Journey from the bustle of Delhi to the rarefied air of Leh, then on to the green pastures of Dras and the wind-carved ridges of Ulley in search of two of Asia’s most captivating predators: the elusive Snow Leopard and the mighty Himalayan Brown Bear. This immersive Himalayan wildlife tour blends gentle acclimatisation with unhurried, vehicle-supported forays to scenic vantage points—no forced trekking, just careful scanning with expert spotters and a pace tailored to your comfort.

In Dras, dawns are spent glassing grassy slopes for bear activity, punctuated by cultural vignettes such as the Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum, frontier hamlets, the War Memorial and sweeping views towards the Nun–Kun peaks. Crossing the dramatic Indus River gorge, you’ll pass the distinctive Brokpa settlements and pause at Domkhar to admire ancient petroglyphs etched into desert varnish—echoes of caravans and mountain lore.

High above the Indus at Ulley, patient days unfold among ibex-lined cliffs andquiet side-valleys where Golden Eagles and Lammergeiers circle on thermals. With seasoned trackers and a naturalist by your side, learn to read the landscape—fresh scrapes, traverse lines, wind and light—while practising ethical wildlife viewing that keeps respectful distance and minimises disturbance. Evenings bring warm debriefs and, in Leh, a contemplative stop at Alchi Monastery rounds off the narrative of culture, conservation and wilderness.

Crafted for all travellers, this is a thoughtfully paced, conservation-minded adventure: big skies, quiet valleys, rich human stories—and the unforgettable thrill of searching for the “Ghost of the Mountains” across Ladakh’s untamed high country.

Day 1 : DEPART NEW YORK → DELHI

Your adventure begins at NEW YORK as you board the overnight flight to Delhi. Anticipation builds for stark high-altitude landscapes, centuries-old monasteries and rare fauna—from Himalayan brown bears in remote meadows to the elusive snow leopard of Ladakh’s rugged valleys. Arrive three hours before departure for a smooth start, keeping your passport, approved India e-Visa and e-tickets handy.

After security, ease into the long-haul rhythm: hydrate, stretch periodically and cue a documentary or playlist about Ladakh to set the tone. Pack a slim “arrival kit” in your cabin bag—face wipes, toothbrush, roll-on, spare T-shirt, universal adaptor and your first-night hotel address—so you land feeling refreshed and organised. Most long-haul fares include a checked bag plus cabin baggage (allowances vary by airline); if comfort matters, consider extra-legroom seating during online check-in.

Heads-up: Ensure your policy explicitly covers high-altitude travel in Ladakh (ideally up to ~6,000 m / 19,700 ft), medical evacuation and internal flights. Keep digital and printed copies of your insurance, passport photo page and e-Visa for immigration and hotel check-in.

Arrival Tip: You’ll reach Delhi (DEL) early morning (IST is ahead of the UK, USA and Canada). If you don’t immediately see our representative, wait by the main exit outside arrivals and call the 24/7 duty number on your voucher. Morning traffic can be busy—transfers may take longer at peak times.

As cabin lights dim, let the engine hum carry you east. Tonight is spent in the air—an evocative prelude to ochre valleys, big-sky horizons and the unforgettable cadence of an authentic Himalayan wildlife tour.

Flight summary: NEW YORK → Delhi (DEL), overnight sector; airline and timings confirmed at ticketing.

Day 2 : TOUCHDOWN IN DELHI — ARRIVALS, TRANSFER & TIME TO RESET

Welcome to India. On arrival at Delhi International Airport (DEL), you’ll be met after customs by our local airport team and assisted to your vehicle for a smooth private transfer to your airport-area hotel (Aerocity). Bags handled and formalities complete, your Himalayan wildlife tour begins at an easy pace so you can recover from the flight.

Arrival Tip: Keep your passport, printed e-Visa and hotel address handy for immigration and security checkpoints. ATMs, currency exchange and eSIM/local SIM kiosks are available in arrivals should you need cash or data before leaving the terminal.

Standard check-in is from 14:00. If you reach the hotel earlier, we’ll request early check-in when possible; otherwise the concierge will store luggage while you relax in the lobby café until your room is ready. Use today to recalibrate: hydrate, enjoy a light meal, and, if you wish, take a gentle stroll around Aerocity’s walkable precinct for a coffee or quick bite.

Good to Know: Delhi’s weather and air quality vary seasonally—carry water and a light scarf. If you don’t immediately see your greeter, wait by the main exit outside arrivals and call the 24/7 duty number on your travel voucher; terminal traffic can occasionally delay meeting points.

The remainder of the day is at leisure. Rest in your room, catch up on sleep, or enjoy the hotel’s facilities—tomorrow you continue towards the mountains, and a calm start today helps with the days at altitude ahead.

Overnight: Delhi (airport area).

Day 3 : DELHI ➔ LEH (LADAKH) — FLIGHT TO THE HIGH HIMALAYA & GENTLE ACCLIMATISATION

After breakfast, transfer back to the airport for your scenic flight to Leh, the cultural heart of Ladakh. As you approach, the Himalaya unfurls in ridgelines and river-cut canyons—keep a window seat if possible for spectacular views of the Indus Valley. Touch down in a starkly beautiful high-altitude landscape that signals the beginning of your true mountain chapter.

Ladakh is now a Union Territory of India, a trans-Himalayan region once aligned with the old state of Jammu & Kashmir. Leh, the former royal capital, shelters a 17th-century hilltop palace whose austere, tiered façades echo Tibetan monastic design—an atmospheric introduction to the crossroads of cultures you’ll encounter over the coming days.

Altitude Advisory: Leh sits around 3,500 m / 11,500 ft. The air is drier and oxygen levels lower than at sea level. Today is intentionally light: hydrate regularly, avoid alcohol, eat simply, and keep movement gentle. If you feel a mild headache or unusual fatigue, rest and inform your guide.

Because this is a high-altitude desert, there are fewer trees and the sun can be intense. Wear a hat and sunscreen, sip water steadily, and allow your body to adapt. If you’re comfortable later, consider a very easy, level stroll near the hotel to loosen your legs—no stairs or exertion today. This measured start helps you enjoy the wildlife-rich days ahead.

Local Insight: The combination of altitude and arid climate can make lips and skin dry—carry lip balm and a light moisturiser. Pulse oximeter readings are naturally lower here; focus on how you feel rather than the number.

The rest of the day remains at leisure for acclimatisation. Organise kit for the days ahead, charge devices, and enjoy quiet time as the mountains work their slow magic. Tomorrow, you’ll be better set to appreciate Ladakh’s monasteries, markets and wildlife corridors at a comfortable pace.

Flight: Delhi (DEL) ➔ Leh (IXL), morning/midday sector (timings subject to confirmation). Overnight: Leh (city area).

Day 4 : LEH ACCLIMATISATION — EASY ORIENTATION & EVENING CONSERVATION TALK

Today is deliberately easy-paced to help your body settle at altitude in Leh. After a relaxed morning, if you feel up to it we can arrange a gentle orientation of town: browse the Leh market where prayer flags flutter and spices scent the air, pause at the hilltop Shanti Stupa for wide-angle views (minimal steps; we drive close to the top), and step quietly into a local Buddhist monastery to hear the soft murmur of mantras and the ring of a prayer bell.

Gentle Explorer: Keep today light—hydrate often, eat simply, and avoid stairs or brisk walking. The sun is strong in this high-altitude desert; wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. If you notice a mild headache or fatigue, rest and let your guide know.

By late afternoon, return to your hotel to unwind. As dusk settles over the Indus Valley, we’ve arranged a special session with the Snow Leopard Conservancy. This engaging talk lifts the lid on the ecology of the snow leopard, its mountain habitat and prey species, the lives of the people who share this landscape, and the real-world conservation responses—such as community partnerships, predator-safe corrals and respectful wildlife tourism—that are helping protect Ladakh’s fauna.

Conservation Focus: Bring your questions. Learn how travellers contribute to research and coexistence initiatives, and how simple field etiquette—quiet voices, no sudden movements, and keeping distance—supports ethical wildlife watching.

Evening at leisure. Organise layers and optics for the days ahead, charge batteries, and rest well—the mountains are calling, and a measured start today pays off when you venture deeper into Ladakh’s wildlife corridors.

Overnight: Leh (city area).

Day 5 : LEH → DRAS — SCENIC TRANS-HIMALAYAN DRIVE, VILLAGE PAUSES & CULTURAL VIGNETTES

Fully acclimatised and well-rested, set out this morning from Leh towards Dras, tracing a high mountain highway through stark ridgelines, braided rivers and wind-carved canyons. The journey is a highlight in its own right: light shifts over the Indus and side valleys, prayer flags ripple on passes, and hamlets appear like mirages against the ochre slopes.

Route Snapshot: Approx. 6 hours’ drive (allow longer with scenic pauses). We’ll break the journey with birding and landscape photography stops, plus short breathers in roadside villages. Keep a warm layer within reach—high-elevation winds can be crisp even under bright sunshine.

En route, step into the Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum of Central Asian & Kargil Trade Artefacts—a compact trove illuminating the historic caravan routes that threaded these valleys. Hand-woven textiles, caravan gear and merchant ledgers tell vivid stories of the old Central Asian trade lifelines that once pulsed through the region.

Cultural Insight: When pausing in villages, ask before photographing people, keep voices low near monasteries and homes, and consider picking up a small snack or tea to support local vendors. Your respectful presence helps sustain community-based tourism.

By late afternoon you’ll reach a remote, homestay-style wildlife lodge near Dras. The remainder of the evening is at leisure: settle into your room, sip hot tea with mountain views, or take a gentle orientation stroll around the lodge to tune into the valley’s rhythm. Rest well—this is prime country for the Himalayan brown bear, and the coming days focus on careful, ethical viewing with local trackers.

Overnight: Dras area (remote wildlife lodge / homestay).

Day 6 : DRAS VALLEY — DAWN BEAR WATCHES, GREEN PASTURES & STORIES OF THE FRONTIER

On Ladakh’s western fringe, just before the rise to Zoji La, the Dras Valley opens into surprising greens: flower-rimmed fields, meltwater streams and summer pastures where nomadic herders move with their flocks. It’s a vivid counterpoint to the stark, rock-bare slopes of eastern Ladakh and a haven for distinctive wildlife—long-tailed marmot, Himalayan red fox and, most notably, India’s largest land carnivore, the Himalayan brown bear.

Here, bears favour open alpine meadows and scrub over forest, hibernating through the hard winter from roughly December to late March. Emerging hungry in spring, activity peaks at dawn and dusk—today is dedicated to careful, ethical viewing supported by experienced spotters.

Field Plan: Pre-dawn start (around 05:00) with your spotter and tour leader to reach gentle vantage slopes (approx. 40–60 minutes on foot; mules/porters can be arranged). Scan for movement until about 09:00 when activity usually eases. A light packed breakfast goes with you; a more substantial breakfast/brunch is served late morning on return. Prefer to remain out? You may stay on the ridge with your spotter and have a hot lunch brought up.

Late morning and afternoon, time permitting, add gentle cultural stop-offs that deepen your sense of place. In Kargil/Dras, the compact Munshi Aziz Bhat Museum illuminates caravan-era lifelines—textiles, ledgers and trade gear—once linking these valleys to Central Asia.

Optional excursions (conditions/time allowing): The War Memorial beneath Tololing offers a powerful perspective on the 1999 conflict and the region’s resilience. A longer foray to the lush Suru Valley rewards with the pre-Tibetan Buddha at Trespone, Kartsekar Fort ruins and superb views of the Nun–Kun massif near Pannikhar. West of Kargil, the restored Hunderman Museum in an old Balti hamlet preserves intimate fragments of frontier life. For wide panoramas, the road to Umba La climbs to one of Dras’s highest passes, affording top-down views of ridgelines and, in summer, encounters with Bakkarwal nomads and rich alpine birdlife.

Respect & Safety: Guides manage viewing distances for ethical wildlife watching. Keep voices low, avoid sudden movement, and never approach bears or cubs. In villages, ask before photographing and consider a small purchase (tea or snacks) to support local livelihoods.

Return in the late afternoon to unwind, review sightings and ready optics for another early start tomorrow in this remarkable brown-bear country.

Day 7 : DRAS — DAWN BEAR WATCHES, VALLEY RIDGES & QUIET AFTERNOONS

Another early start focuses on Himalayan brown bears as they move across grassy, dew-soaked slopes. With your spotter and tour leader, you’ll make a steady ascent to a known vantage ridge to glass the side-valleys for subtle movement—dark shapes rolling stones, snuffling at roots or crossing snow-fed gullies. Keep an eye out for long-tailed marmots, Himalayan red fox, golden eagles and lammergeiers riding morning thermals.

Tracking Brief: Depart around 05:00; gentle uphill walking 40–60 minutes. We scan until ~09:00 when activity tapers, then return for a relaxed late breakfast/brunch. You may remain out longer with your spotter if you wish; a hot field lunch can be arranged to the viewpoint.

Midday is deliberately easy—hydrate, organise layers and review images. Later, a soft afternoon circuit explores nearby meadows and streamlines where birdlife is lively and light is kind for photography. As the sun lowers, we settle at a different lookout to maximise chances of fresh behaviour before evening draws a violet line across the ridge.

Day 8 : DRAS — WIDER FORAYS, ALTERNATIVE VANTAGE POINTS & BIRDING DIVERSIONS

With two full days in the valley, we widen our search to new spurs and bowls that bears favour as forage shifts. At dawn we rotate to a fresh viewpoint to avoid habituation and to read overnight tracks and diggings. Between sessions, we may weave through villages for short tea breaks, practice ID on accentors, rosefinches and wagtails, and scan for ibisbill or common merganser on broader river flats.

Wildlife Etiquette: Your guides manage distance and angles for ethical wildlife viewing. Keep voices low, avoid sudden movement, never approach bears or cubs, and remain behind your guide when repositioning. In villages, ask before photographing and consider a small purchase to support local livelihoods.

As evening returns, we take a final light sweep of the slopes. With patient scanning and measured pace, these back-to-back days in Dras deepen your connection to the landscape and the rhythms of its high-altitude wildlife.

Day 9 : DRAS ➔ ULLEY — BORDERLAND STORIES, INDUS GORGE & ANCIENT ROCK ART

Set off west-to-east across Ladakh towards Ulley, a tranquil hamlet perched in the side valleys above the Indus. Today’s route stitches together frontier histories and raw Himalayan scenery: terraced fields and willow-lined streams give way to stark canyon walls as the road threads the dramatic Indus River gorge.

Route Snapshot: Approx. 6½ hours of driving, with curated pauses that break the journey into easy segments. Expect mountain highways, occasional roadworks and generous photo stops—timings vary with conditions.

First, trace the borderlands near Hundarman, a historic Balti settlement close to the Line of Control. The restored village-museum preserves intimate fragments of everyday frontier life—tools, letters, tins and textiles—quietly evoking families separated by shifting lines on a map.

Back on the highway, the road slips into the burnished chasm of the Indus gorge. Along this sector you’ll pass through the realm of the Brokpa (Drokpa) communities—famed for distinctive traditional attire and terraced barley fields that cling to improbable slopes. Light and shadow chase each other across cliffs as the river carves its relentless path east.

Before Ulley, pause at Domkhar to view ancient petroglyphs—etched silhouettes of ibex, hunters and geometric motifs pecked into dark desert varnish. These rock carvings are among Ladakh’s most tangible links to deep time, a quiet counterpoint to the rushing Indus below.

Culture & Care: Ask permission before photographing people, especially in Brokpa villages. At petroglyph sites, look but don’t touch—oils and abrasion damage the carvings. Pack layers; wind funnelling through the gorge can feel brisk even in sunshine.

Arrive in Ulley by late afternoon, where rugged side-valleys, rocky spurs and high grazing slopes set the stage for the next chapter of your wildlife journey. Unwind, sort optics and layers, and enjoy the quiet of the mountains—tomorrow, the high country beckons.

Day 10 : ULLEY — HIGH-ALTITUDE WILDLIFE BASE, BIG CATS & WIND-CARVED RIDGES

Welcome to Ulley, a tiny hamlet north of the Indus River in West Ladakh, perched at roughly 3,960 m / 13,000 ft. Past terraced fields and summer pastures, rocky spurs overlook a lattice of side-valleys where the legendary snow leopard pads unseen along ridgelines. The air is crisp, the silence profound, and the horizons feel close enough to touch.

Field Hub: Your Ulley base is a dedicated, community-led wildlife outpost created to channel tourism into local livelihoods and conservation. Expect flexible daily plans, expert spotters, and a focus on ethical wildlife viewing—quiet movements, careful distances, and minimal disturbance.

This corner of Ladakh is superb for Himalayan ibex scaling near-vertical rock, urial on open slopes, and wide-ranging wolf. Closer to the villages, you may encounter red fox, while overhead golden eagles, bearded vulture (lammergeier) and Himalayan griffon trace lazy circuits on thermals. With patience, good light and the valley’s incomparable stillness, the mountains begin to reveal their rhythm.

Tracking Plan: Start at first light to scan fresh sign—tracks, scrapes and vantage travel lines. We’ll combine short on-foot walks to nearby spurs with vehicle forays into adjacent valleys, rotating viewpoints to read wind, sun and slope. Bring warm layers, gloves and steady optics; the breeze can be keen even in sunshine.

Afternoons remain flexible for extended scans, short village tea breaks, or a quiet return to the base to review images and warm up before an evening session. As dusk paints the ridges, settle behind the scope for one more sweep—this is prime country, and patience here is often rewarded.

Day 11 : ULLEY — RIDGE LINES, IBEX COUNTRY & THE “GHOST OF THE MOUNTAINS”

Another dawn in Ulley finds you scanning wind-carved spurs and side-valleys where the elusive snow leopard moves along skyline trails. The morning light reveals fresh sign—scrapes, prints, vantage tracks—while Himalayan ibex cling to improbable ledges and urial graze open slopes. Overhead, golden eagles, lammergeiers and Himalayan griffons ride the first thermals; closer to villages, red fox may ghost along field edges.

Spotting Strategy: This isn’t a trek—it’s precise wildlife searching. Short, steady walks link vehicle-supported viewpoints; pace and gradients are tailored to your comfort. We rotate lookouts through the day to follow wind, sun and shadow, using scopes for quiet, long-range observation.

Midday is gentle to preserve energy at altitude—time to review images, warm up, and reset optics. As shadows lengthen, return to an alternate ridge for the magic hour: a patient sweep across gullies and broken rock where cats often reveal themselves at last light.

Day 12 : ULLEY — FRESH VALLEYS, QUIET CORRIDORS & READING THE LANDSCAPE

With field knowledge deepening, you widen the search to neighbouring bowls and traverse lines used by ibex and, at times, wolf. Early circuits trace ridges for new tracks and overnight movement; later, a soft loop through hamlets offers a window onto high-altitude life before settling into another measured evening scan. The rhythm is unhurried, the focus sharp: let the mountains come to you.

Pace & Comfort: Movement remains at your preferred pace with trackers and a naturalist guiding each decision. Layers, wind protection and sun care are essential; short tea stops can be woven in, and packed refreshments arranged for longer forays when you wish to stay out.

As dusk paints the ridgelines, settle for one last sweep across couloirs and broken shale. Two full days of patient searching in Ulley’s valleys and mountains markedly elevate your chances while keeping the experience ethical, unhurried and deeply immersive.

Day 13 : ULLEY ➔ LEH — FINAL MORNING SCAN, ALCHI MONASTERY & INDUS BACKROADS

At first light, make a final, unhurried sweep across Ulley’s ridgelines for the snow leopard and companion species—Himalayan ibex, urial, red fox, and raptors tracing early thermals. After a relaxed lunch and a last look over the side-valleys, it’s time to turn east for Leh, carrying with you the stillness and stark beauty of Ladakh’s high country.

Route Snapshot: Ulley to Leh typically takes around 2–3½ hours by road, depending on conditions and photo stops. Expect winding mountain highways, occasional roadworks, and big-sky views along the Indus River.

En route, pause at Alchi Monastery, a serene complex on the Indus plain renowned for its early medieval murals and woodwork. Step quietly through dimly lit temples where intricate mandalas and Bodhisattva figures glow on ancient walls—an exquisite contrast to the raw, wind-scoured peaks you’ve just explored.

Culture & Care: Dress modestly, move quietly, and follow no-flash photography rules; some chapels may prohibit photos entirely. Please avoid touching murals or wood columns—time and fingertips are not kind to ancient art.

Arrive in Leh by late afternoon. The evening is at leisure—browse the bazaar for last-minute keepsakes, enjoy a café stop, and organise bags for tomorrow’s onward journey.

Day 14 : LEH ➔ DELHI — MORNING FLIGHT & AN EASY DAY IN THE CAPITAL

Bid the mountains a quiet farewell and transfer to the airport for your flight from Leh (IXL) to Delhi (DEL). As the aircraft climbs, snow-streaked ridgelines and glacial valleys fall away beneath you—on a clear day the views are unforgettable. Touch down in Delhi late morning/around midday (subject to schedule) with the remainder of the day at leisure or free to explore at your own pace.

Flight Notes: This is a domestic sector; baggage allowances may be lower than your international ticket—pack accordingly. Morning departures from Leh can be weather-sensitive; schedules sometimes adjust. Keep warm layers handy for the cool, early start and carry essentials (medication, documents, valuables) in your cabin bag.

After arrival, ease into city tempo: enjoy a relaxed lunch, catch up on rest, or take a gentle stroll in a nearby park. If you prefer to venture out, choose one concise theme rather than trying to do everything—Delhi rewards an unhurried approach.

City Ideas (Optional): Heritage: Humayun’s Tomb & Lodhi Gardens for Indo-Islamic architecture and leafy paths. Iconic: Qutub Minar or a drive past India Gate and the Raj-era boulevards. Old Delhi: a short rickshaw loop through Chandni Chowk and the spice lanes (go with a guide and mind the traffic). Food: sample classic North Indian dishes at a reputable restaurant; avoid raw salads if you’re sensitive.

Evening at leisure. Organise your bags, charge devices and keep travel documents accessible for tomorrow’s onward journey.

Flight: Leh (IXL) ➔ Delhi (DEL), morning sector; timings subject to confirmation.

Day 15 : DELHI ➔ HOME — AIRPORT TRANSFER & INTERNATIONAL DEPARTURE

After breakfast, it’s time to close the loop on your Himalayan journey. Meet your driver for a smooth airport transfer and proceed to international departures at Delhi (DEL). As you check in, savour a last glimpse of India’s colour and cadence—memories of wind-sculpted ridges, prayer flags and rare wildlife will travel with you.

Departure Notes: Arrive at the terminal 3 hours before your international flight. Keep passport, e-ticket and any visa/ETA details to hand for checks. Baggage allowances on your homeward sector may differ from domestic legs—verify weight limits at online check-in to avoid excess fees.

Final Checklist: Pack lithium batteries and cameras in carry-on; liquids max 100 ml per container. Keep medications and valuables with you. Spend or exchange remaining INR before security if needed. For UK/USA/Canada arrivals, review customs allowances and declare restricted items—no wildlife products.

Once airside, relax with a coffee or light meal and browse for last-minute souvenirs. Your flight home marks the end of this adventure—but the stillness of Ladakh’s high valleys and the thrill of wildlife encounters will linger long after landing.

Flight: Delhi (DEL) ➔ Home city (international sector); airline and timings as per ticket.
