Day 1 : DEPARTURE NEW YORK → KATHMANDU

Your NEW YORK to Kathmandu flight marks the start of an unforgettable adventure into the Himalaya. This evening, check in at NEW YORK and board your overnight flight to Kathmandu, gateway to Nepal’s mountain kingdoms. Settle in, relax, and let anticipation build for the temples, markets, and snow-kissed peaks that await at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM).

As the cabin lights dim, imagine prayer flags fluttering over ridge-top stupas, the bustle of Kathmandu’s old lanes, and sunrise over serrated horizons. Tomorrow you’ll touch down in a city where medieval courtyards, pagoda rooftops, and warm Nepali hospitality set the tone for your journey.

Travel notes: There are no nonstop flights from NEW YORK to Kathmandu; most routes are one-stop via hubs such as Doha, Istanbul, Delhi or Dubai. Typical total travel time (including layover) is ~12–16 hours, depending on connection. You will arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM). Many nationalities (including UK) can obtain a tourist visa on arrival at KTM; completing Nepal’s online pre-arrival form within 15 days of travel can speed things up. Ensure your passport has at least 6 months’ validity, carry a copy of your first hotel confirmation, and keep essential meds and valuables in your hand luggage as schedules and baggage rules can vary by airline.

Day 2 : ARRIVE IN KATHMANDU — FIRST IMPRESSIONS AT LEISURE

On arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), complete your entry formalities and meet your representative for a smooth transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is left entirely at leisure to recover from your flight and soak in the atmosphere of Kathmandu Valley at your own pace.

You may wish to take a gentle stroll through the lively lanes of Thamel, where colourful shops, cafés, and trekking stores line the streets, or wander into the bustling Asan Bazaar to see locals trading spices and vegetables. Those feeling energetic can walk towards Kathmandu Durbar Square (UNESCO), to admire its historic temples and palaces from the outside. These experiences are optional and unguided, giving you freedom to explore or simply rest and prepare for the days ahead.

Overnight stay at hotel in Kathmandu. Meals included: none.

Travel notes: Today is designed as a free day at leisure for rest and gentle exploration. Any sightseeing mentioned is self-guided and not part of the scheduled inclusions. Kathmandu sits at ~1,400 m elevation (no altitude issues for most visitors). Footpaths in older quarters are uneven—wear comfortable shoes. Modest dress is appreciated at religious sites. Only bottled/filtered water should be consumed.

Day 3 : DRIVE FROM KATHMANDU TO RAMECHHAP (MANTHALI)

After breakfast, set out on a surface journey eastward from Kathmandu to Ramechhap (Manthali), the small town that now serves as the main departure point for flights to Lukla. The drive takes you away from the bustle of the capital and into Nepal’s rural heartland. As the road winds through forested hillsides and fertile valleys, you’ll pass terraced fields carved into steep slopes, small market villages, and everyday scenes of local life—farmers working their plots, children walking to school, and rivers cutting deep gorges through the landscape. After approximately 4–5 hours, arrive in Ramechhap and settle into your lodge, resting ahead of tomorrow’s exciting flight into the high Himalaya.

Though today is primarily a transfer day, it offers a gentle immersion into the countryside of Nepal, where life unfolds at a slower pace. The change of scenery marks the beginning of your transition from bustling Kathmandu to the serenity of the mountains.

Overnight stay in trekking lodge. Meals included: breakfast.

Why Ramechhap? In order to reduce congestion at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan Airport, Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority redirected the majority of Lukla flights to Ramechhap (Manthali) Airport in 2019. Located around 130 km east of Kathmandu, this smaller airfield offers more reliable departures during the trekking season. Although a limited number of flights still leave from Kathmandu, these are prone to delays, so Ramechhap provides the most dependable route to start your Everest adventure. All transfers and accommodation are arranged for you, ensuring a smooth connection despite the early departure the following day.

Travel notes: The drive from Kathmandu to Ramechhap covers around 130 km and takes 4–5 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions. Roads are winding and occasionally bumpy—motion sickness medication may be useful for sensitive travellers. Flights from Ramechhap to Lukla depart very early in the morning, so staying overnight close to the airport ensures you are ready for your onward journey into the Himalaya.

Day 4 : FLY RAMECHHAP TO LUKLA (2,886 M) & TREK TO PHAKDING (2,640 M)

Rise early this morning for your transfer to Ramechhap Airport (Manthali) to board the short yet breathtaking flight into the mountains. In just 30 minutes you’ll touch down at the legendary Lukla Airport, gateway to the Everest region, perched dramatically on a hillside at 2,886 m. After a brief pause to meet your trekking team and organise loads, begin the first stage of your Everest Base Camp trail.

Leaving Lukla behind, the trail follows a gentle climb along the left bank of the Dudh Koshi River. Prayer wheels spin quietly and Mani walls line the path, while in the distance the snow-capped peak of Nupla (5,885 m) crowns the Kongde Ridge. Descend gradually to merge with the main Everest route, with glimpses of Kusum Kanguru (6,367 m) rising at the far end of the valley. The path continues through forests of pine and rhododendron, crossing small streams and villages such as Ghat, before reaching Phakding (2,640 m) after about 3–4 hours of trekking.

Overnight stay in trekking lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Travel notes: The Ramechhap–Lukla flight is highly weather-dependent; delays or cancellations are common in the Everest region. Lukla Airport is small and basic but safe for experienced mountain pilots. The trek to Phakding is approximately 8 km and takes 3–4 hours at an easy pace. Trails include several short ascents and descents on rocky ground—sturdy trekking boots are recommended. Overnight stays are in local tea houses, which provide simple meals and basic facilities.

Day 5 : TREK FROM PHAKDING (2,610 M) TO NAMCHE BAZAAR (3,440 M)

Today’s trail is one of the most scenic yet demanding stretches of the lower Khumbu, taking around five to six hours. Begin along a level path beside the Dudh Koshi River, with the striking pyramid of Thamserku (6,623 m) rising across the valley. Cross a stream and climb gradually past terraced fields to the hamlet of Bengar. From here, the path ascends through pine forest to reach Chumoa, before undulating past small villages and crossing another stream to arrive at Monjo, the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park. Here you register and pay the park entry fee.

Descending stone steps, cross a wooden bridge to the right bank of the Dudh Koshi and walk a short distance to Jorsale, a small settlement of teahouses and the last stop before Namche. Beyond Jorsale, the trail runs through a forested valley where the Dudh Koshi and Bhote Koshi rivers meet. Cross a high suspension bridge over the confluence and brace yourself for the steep, steady climb that defines the approach to Namche. The zigzagging ascent is tough, but partway up you are rewarded with your first distant views of Mount Everest (8,849 m) and Lhotse (8,516 m) shimmering beyond the ridgelines.

After a final push, the gradient eases and the amphitheatre-shaped settlement of Namche Bazaar unfolds ahead. Encircled by towering peaks on three sides, Namche is the historic trading hub of the Khumbu, famous for its Saturday market and bustling streets lined with cafés, bakeries, shops, and trekking lodges.

Overnight stay in trekking lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Travel notes: The trek from Phakding to Namche covers about 11–12 km with an altitude gain of ~830 m. The final ascent is steep and challenging—pace yourself and stay hydrated. This is often the first day where altitude is felt, so walk slowly (“bistari, bistari” in Nepali). Namche Bazaar offers ATMs, internet cafés, bakeries, and gear shops, making it the last major supply point before higher elevations.

Day 6 : REST & ACCLIMATISATION IN NAMCHE BAZAAR (3,440 M)

Today is a scheduled rest day in Namche Bazaar to aid acclimatisation before heading to higher altitudes. Namche, carved into a natural amphitheatre between two ridges, is the heart of the Khumbu region and offers an abundance of teahouses, bakeries, and mountain shops. Beyond its bustling streets, the village provides some of the most magnificent viewpoints in the lower Everest region.

For acclimatisation, you may take a gentle hike to Khumjung, a Sherpa village nestled beneath the holy peak of Khumbila. Here you can visit the local monastery and immerse yourself in Sherpa traditions, while enjoying sweeping views of Everest, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Nuptse, Lhotse, Tawche, and Kongde Ri. Alternatively, a shorter walk leads to Syangboche (3,800 m), home to the famous Everest View Hotel. From its terrace, gaze upon some of the world’s highest peaks including Everest, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, and Kusum Kanguru.

Closer to Namche, the National Park Centre and Sherpa Museum also provide fascinating insights into Sherpa culture, mountaineering history, and conservation efforts, all set against stunning panoramas of the Himalaya.

Overnight stay in trekking lodge in Namche Bazaar. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Travel notes: This is a designated acclimatisation day. Light hikes to higher altitudes and returning to Namche to sleep lower follow the “climb high, sleep low” principle and support altitude adjustment. Expect a total of 3–5 hours of optional walking depending on the route chosen. Dress in layers—mornings and evenings can be cold, but midday sun is strong. Namche is the last place with reliable ATMs, bakeries, and well-stocked shops before heading higher into the Khumbu.

Day 7 : NAMCHE BAZAAR TO TYANGBOCHE (3867 METERS)

Today’s trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche takes around five to six hours and is one of the most spectacular sections of the Everest trail. Climbing gently out of Namche, the path contours a ridge with sweeping panoramas of Thamserku, Kangtega, and Kusum Kanguru. Below, the valley plunges steeply to the Dudh Koshi River, glinting far below. As the trail bends around a spur ridge, an unforgettable vista opens before you: Ama Dablam (6,812 m) rising like a jewel, with Everest (8,849 m), Lhotse (8,516 m), Nuptse (7,861 m), and Tawoche (6,501 m) dominating the skyline.

After a gradual descent, you reach a junction where one route branches towards Gokyo. Continue downhill past the hamlet of Trashinga, where the sound of the river grows louder as you descend to the valley floor at Phunki Tenga (3,250 m). Here, cross a bridge over the Dudh Koshi and begin the long ascent to Tengboche. The first section is steep, but shaded forest of pine and rhododendron offers some respite. Higher up, the incline eases, revealing ever-expanding mountain views until you reach the stone gateway that marks entry into Tengboche.

Set on a wide meadow plateau framed by white peaks, Tengboche Monastery is the spiritual centre of the Khumbu. With its colourful prayer flags, ornate murals, and chanting monks, it is a serene and inspiring place to pause on your Everest journey. Sunset here is unforgettable, with Everest and Ama Dablam glowing in the fading light.

Overnight stay in trekking lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Travel notes: The trek from Namche to Tengboche covers around 10 km with a net altitude gain of ~430 m. The descent to Phunki Tenga and subsequent climb to Tengboche can be physically demanding; pace yourself and take breaks in the forested section. Tengboche is home to the famous Tengboche Monastery, which can be visited when open (donations welcome). Expect cold nights at this altitude; pack warm layers.

Day 8 : TREK FROM TENGBOCHE (3,867 M) TO DINGBOCHE (4,260 M)

Begin today’s trek with a descent from Tengboche, the backdrop of the Khumbu mountains gradually giving way as you pass through a rhododendron-clad forest. Soon the trail opens into gentler terrain, leading you past long Mani stone walls into the quiet village of Deboche. Continue to Minlinggo, where you cross a suspension bridge over the Imja Khola and begin a steady ascent on the opposite bank, all the while gazing up at the dramatic south face of Ama Dablam (6,812 m) alongside the elegant spire of Kangtega (6,779 m).

The trail climbs along a chorten-lined ridge before reaching a fork. The upper path leads towards Pangboche Monastery, while you take the lower path through Pangboche village itself, surrounded by potato fields encircled with protective stone walls. Skirt a rocky hillside and cross a small stream before continuing above the riverbanks, where the trail gradually rises through terraced slopes. After passing a large Mani stupa, the gradient eases and the walk becomes more moderate as you enter the expansive Imja Valley.

Here, the scenery is dominated by the towering massifs of Ama Dablam, Nuptse, and Lhotse, with Island Peak (Imja Tse, 6,189 m) visible to the east. Eventually you arrive in Dingboche (4,260 m), a windswept settlement framed by a patchwork of barley, buckwheat, and potato fields, each protected by stone walls against grazing animals and icy mountain winds. Dingboche offers one of the most dramatic settings of the entire trek, where farming life and Himalayan grandeur coexist in perfect harmony.

Overnight stay in trekking lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Travel notes: The trek from Tengboche to Dingboche takes around 5–6 hours with an altitude gain of ~400 m. The trail includes a mix of steep ascents, suspension bridge crossings, and gradual valley climbs. As you pass 4,000 m, altitude symptoms can begin to show—walk slowly, stay hydrated, and avoid overexertion. Dingboche is the last substantial village before the upper Khumbu, offering teahouses, bakeries, and internet cafés, though facilities become increasingly basic beyond this point.

Day 9 : REST & ACCLIMATISATION IN DINGBOCHE (4,260 M)

Today is a scheduled rest day in Dingboche, giving your body vital time to adjust to the higher altitude before heading further up the Khumbu. Set in a wide, windswept valley, Dingboche is framed by stone-walled fields and dramatic Himalayan peaks, creating one of the most photogenic settings of the trek.

For acclimatisation, you can enjoy a short hike in the valley with breathtaking views of the north face of Ama Dablam (6,812 m) and the striking Lhotse–Nuptse ridge. Another popular option is to hike up to Chhukung (4,730 m), a small settlement further up the valley. From here, the panorama is unforgettable, stretching across Island Peak (Imja Tse, 6,189 m), Makalu (8,485 m), Ama Dablam, and Tawoche Peak. After the hike, descend back to Dingboche for a relaxed afternoon, resting in the lodge or exploring the village at your own pace.

This day is less about distance and more about preparing your body for the higher climbs ahead, following the vital principle of “climb high, sleep low.”

Overnight stay in trekking lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Travel notes: Today is a planned acclimatisation day. Hikes to surrounding ridges or to Chhukung take 3–5 hours depending on pace. At this altitude (4,260 m+), altitude sickness can begin to affect some trekkers—walk slowly, stay hydrated, and rest often. Dingboche has several bakeries, teahouses, and basic internet services, making it a comfortable place to pause before pushing towards Lobuche and Everest Base Camp.

Day 10 : TREK FROM DINGBOCHE (4,260 M) TO LOBUCHE (4,930 M)

Leaving Dingboche behind, the trail heads gently northward for about 50 minutes, passing a mani-prayer stupa and offering sweeping views back over the valley. To the south, Ama Dablam and Tawoche stand tall, while to the north the peaks of Pokalde (5,741 m), Kongma Tse (5,820 m), and the formidable wall of Nuptse dominate the horizon. Below, you can look down upon the village of Pheriche, another key settlement in the Khumbu.

After around two hours, the trail merges with the path coming from Pheriche as you reach Dugla (4,595 m), where a small wooden bridge crosses the outflow of the Khumbu Glacier. This is a good place to pause for lunch before tackling the steep ascent ahead. From Dugla, climb for about an hour up a tough hill, lined with memorial cairns dedicated to climbers who lost their lives on Everest expeditions. At the crest, magnificent views of Pumori (7,161 m) and surrounding peaks reward the effort.

From here, the trail levels out as you continue across rocky glacial moraine, gradually making your way towards Lobuche (4,930 m). Tucked into a windswept hollow, Lobuche offers a scattering of trekking lodges, sheltered from the gusts of the Khumbu. Despite the stark landscape, this is a milestone on the approach to Everest Base Camp, bringing you ever closer to the high Himalaya.

Overnight stay in trekking lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Travel notes: Today’s trek takes about 5–6 hours with an altitude gain of ~670 m. The steep climb from Dugla is one of the more strenuous sections, so pace yourself and rest often. As you approach 5,000 m, altitude effects can intensify—monitor your breathing and stay hydrated. Lobuche has limited but functional teahouse facilities. Nights are much colder here, with temperatures often dropping well below freezing.

Day 11 : TREK FROM LOBUCHE (4,930 M) TO EVEREST BASE CAMP (5,364 M) VIA GORAKSHEP (5,160 M)

This is the day every trekker dreams of — the journey to the legendary Everest Base Camp. Begin with a gradual ascent from Lobuche along the lateral moraine of the Khumbu Glacier, navigating rocky terrain and glacial ridges. Along the way, you pass frozen ponds and jagged ice formations, stark reminders of the power and beauty of the Himalaya.

After about three hours, arrive at Gorakshep (5,160 m), a remote settlement set on a sandy plateau beneath the black summit of Kala Patthar (5,545 m) and the striking pyramid of Pumori (7,161 m). This was the site of the original Everest Base Camp, and today it serves as the final staging post for trekkers. After a short rest and an early lunch, continue on the trail leading directly to Base Camp.

The path to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) weaves across glacial rubble, ice pinnacles, and rocky dunes. Along the way, the walls of Nuptse, Khumbutse (6,665 m), and the distant ridge of Lho La tower above. From time to time, you may hear the thunderous roar of an avalanche rumbling down the slopes — a dramatic soundtrack to the trek. After several hours of trekking, you finally arrive at the prayer flag-strewn cairns marking the world’s most famous base camp. From here, gaze upon the dramatic Khumbu Icefall, the starting point for Everest summit expeditions.

After savouring the moment and capturing memories, retrace your steps back across the glacier to Gorakshep, where you will spend the night in a trekking lodge at over 5,000 m.

Overnight stay in trekking lodge at Gorakshep. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Travel notes: Today’s trek is one of the longest and most challenging, taking around 7–8 hours with significant time spent above 5,000 m. The trail is rocky and uneven, with sections crossing glacial moraine. Although Everest itself is not visible from Base Camp, the sense of achievement and the views of the Khumbu Icefall are unforgettable. Nights at Gorakshep can be extremely cold, with very basic facilities — prepare for a rugged but rewarding stay at one of the highest overnight points of the trek.

Day 12 : TREK FROM GORAKSHEP (5,160 M) TO KALA PATTHAR (5,545 M) & DESCEND TO PHERICHE (4,243 M)

Rise before dawn for one of the highlights of the entire trek — the steep climb to Kala Patthar (5,545 m). The trail zigzags uphill for around two hours, demanding effort at this high altitude, but the reward is immense. As the sun rises, the summit of Mount Everest (8,849 m) glows in soft hues of pink and gold, joined by the surrounding giants: Pumori, Lingtren, Khumbutse, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Thamserku. From this vantage point, you gain the most iconic and panoramic views of Everest and its neighbouring peaks — a truly unforgettable moment.

After time for photographs and reflection, descend back to Gorakshep for breakfast before retracing your steps down the valley. The trek back follows the moraine and eventually descends into lower altitudes, offering easier breathing with each step. By afternoon, you arrive in Pheriche (4,243 m), a windswept settlement known as the “windy town of the Khumbu.” Here, stone lodges and fields dotted with grazing yaks provide a stark but beautiful contrast to the icy landscapes above.

Pheriche is also home to the Himalayan Rescue Association Aid Post, staffed by volunteer doctors who provide medical support to trekkers and local Sherpa communities. Towering above the village are the sheer faces of Cholatse (6,440 m) and Tawache (6,495 m), completing the dramatic scenery of this resting place.

Overnight stay in trekking lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Travel notes: The climb to Kala Patthar is physically demanding due to steep gradients and thin air — take it slow and allow 2–3 hours for the ascent and descent. Dress warmly as pre-dawn temperatures can be extremely cold with biting winds. The trek to Pheriche takes 5–6 hours in total, covering around 12 km. Facilities improve slightly here compared to Gorakshep, and mobile phone access is available. This drop in altitude will feel noticeably easier on your lungs after the exertions of the high Khumbu.

Day 13 : TREK FROM PHERICHE (4,243 M) TO NAMCHE BAZAAR (3,440 M)

Today you begin your descent back towards the lower valleys of the Khumbu. Leaving Pheriche, the trail heads southward, passing through Orsho and onwards to Pangboche, a village renowned for its historic monastery. This is one of the oldest gompas in the region and is said to have once displayed relics believed to belong to the mythical Yeti, adding an air of legend to the journey.

From Pangboche, continue descending through pine and rhododendron forests towards Tengboche Monastery (3,860 m). This spiritual hub of the Khumbu, framed by views of Ama Dablam and Everest, provides a final chance to soak in its serene atmosphere and colourful prayer flags before continuing down the trail.

The path then winds through the forested slopes and suspension bridges that lead towards Namche Bazaar. After several hours of steady descent, the familiar amphitheatre-shaped town comes into view. By afternoon, you arrive back in Namche, where the bustling streets, cafés, and shops provide a warm contrast to the stark wilderness of the upper Khumbu.

Overnight stay in trekking lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Travel notes: The trek from Pheriche to Namche is a long day, taking 6–7 hours of walking with significant descent. Although downhill, the trail includes steep sections and can be tough on the knees—trekking poles are highly recommended. At lower altitudes, the air feels thicker and breathing easier, making for a noticeable sense of relief after several days above 4,000 m.

Day 14 : TREK FROM NAMCHE BAZAAR (3,440 M) TO LUKLA (2,860 M)

Your final day on the trail begins with a long descent from Namche Bazaar, retracing your steps along stone staircases and forested slopes. The path winds steadily down through Monjo and the entrance of Sagarmatha National Park, before following the valley floor alongside the Dudh Koshi River. Along the way, you cross a series of suspension bridges draped in prayer flags, the sound of rushing water accompanying your steady progress.

Although today is easier on the lungs than the high-altitude days, the continuous descent can be tough on the knees, and there are still a few short but sharp uphill climbs. The final challenge comes in the form of a 45-minute ascent from the valley floor up to the airstrip at Lukla (2,860 m). Here, with the trek complete, you can celebrate your achievement with your trekking team in the heart of this bustling Sherpa town.

Reaching Lukla marks the successful end of your Everest Base Camp trek, the gateway town where your adventure began and where you will spend your final night in the Khumbu before flying back to Kathmandu.

Overnight stay in trekking lodge. Meals included: breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Travel notes: The trek from Namche to Lukla typically takes 6–7 hours. Although mostly downhill, the final uphill stretch into Lukla can feel demanding after many days on the trail. Trekking poles help reduce strain on knees during the descent. Tonight is often celebrated with a farewell dinner in your lodge, where you can thank your guides and porters before the early morning flight out of Lukla tomorrow.

Day 15 : FLY FROM LUKLA TO RAMECHHAP & DRIVE TO KATHMANDU (1,400 M)

After an early breakfast, board your short but thrilling mountain flight from Lukla to Ramechhap (Manthali Airport). In just 20–25 minutes, you leave behind the dramatic peaks of the Khumbu and return to the rolling foothills of eastern Nepal. On arrival, your vehicle awaits for the drive back to Kathmandu, a journey of around 4–5 hours that winds through rural landscapes, river valleys, and terraced hillsides before reaching the bustle of the capital.

Once back in Kathmandu, transfer to your hotel. The remainder of the day is at leisure to rest after the long journey, enjoy a hot shower, or explore the lively streets of Thamel for a well-earned celebratory meal or souvenir shopping.

Overnight stay in hotel in Kathmandu. Meals included: breakfast.

Travel notes: Flights from Lukla are weather-dependent and delays are common. Most services now operate into Ramechhap rather than Kathmandu due to air traffic restrictions. The onward drive takes 4–5 hours depending on traffic and road conditions. Carry snacks and water for the road, and keep essentials with you in your daypack in case of delays.

Day 16 : REST & LEISURE DAY IN KATHMANDU

After days of trekking in the high Himalaya, today is set aside entirely for rest and relaxation in Kathmandu. Take the opportunity to unwind at your hotel, enjoy a slow breakfast, and let your body recover. For those with energy to spare, you may choose to stroll through the nearby streets, browsing colourful shops, cafés, and local markets at your own pace. The evening is free to explore further or simply reflect on your journey, surrounded by the vibrant atmosphere of Nepal’s capital.

Overnight stay at hotel in Kathmandu. Meals included: breakfast.

Travel notes: Today is unscheduled, giving you full freedom to relax or explore. Any sightseeing, shopping, or dining undertaken is self-guided and not part of the tour inclusions. Taxis are inexpensive and widely available should you wish to visit further afield attractions. Keep hydrated, rest as needed, and enjoy the more relaxed rhythm of Kathmandu after your trek.

Day 17 : DEPARTURE FROM KATHMANDU – FAREWELL TO THE HIMALAYA

All too soon, it is time to bid farewell to Nepal. After breakfast, transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport for your homebound flight. As the plane lifts from the Kathmandu Valley and the peaks of the Himalaya recede into the distance, you may reflect on the unforgettable days spent trekking through Sherpa villages, crossing high suspension bridges, and standing at the foot of Everest Base Camp. The adventure leaves you not only with memories of towering mountains and vivid landscapes, but also with the warmth and resilience of the people who call the Khumbu home.

This is not a goodbye, but a gentle promise that the Himalaya will always welcome you back — a place that can never be fully known, only cherished through each new journey.

Meals included: breakfast (subject to flight time).

Travel notes: Airport transfers are arranged to coincide with your international departure. Please ensure you are checked in at least 3 hours prior to your flight. If departing on an early flight, hotel breakfast may not be available. Keep your passport, valuables, and souvenirs safely packed and allow extra time for security checks.

Important Travel Information

Who is this trek suitable for?
This journey is physically demanding and best suited to travellers with a good level of fitness and a taste for adventure. Expect 5–8 hours of walking most days, occasionally longer, on uneven mountain trails with significant ascents and descents. Porters will carry your main luggage, leaving you responsible only for a daypack with essentials. Previous trekking experience is helpful, though determination and flexibility are just as important as stamina.

Altitude and acclimatisation
The trek reaches a maximum altitude of 5,545 m at Kala Patthar, with several overnight stops above 4,000 m. Rest days are built into the schedule to aid adaptation, but Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) remains a risk. Symptoms may include headache, nausea, or dizziness. Walking slowly, staying hydrated, and listening to your guide’s advice are the best safeguards. The principle of “climb high, sleep low” is followed to encourage safer acclimatisation.

Things to be aware of
• Several modern suspension bridges are crossed en route; some are long and high, which may be challenging for those with vertigo.
• Facilities in mountain lodges are basic, with shared bathrooms and limited hot water.
• Menus become more restricted at higher altitudes, though meals remain nourishing.
• Delays to domestic flights are common; patience is essential.
• Weather in the Himalaya is unpredictable — snow, rain, or sudden cold snaps are possible at any time.

Accommodation
In Kathmandu, you will stay in carefully selected 3★ hotels on a bed & breakfast basis.
On trek, nights are spent in simple tea houses. Rooms are basic and may be twin-share or dormitory style. Bathrooms are shared, and hot showers or charging points usually incur a small local fee. During busy trekking seasons (Sept–Nov and Mar–Apr), lodges can be crowded with limited availability. This rustic style of accommodation is part of the authentic Himalayan experience.

Meals
While trekking, three meals a day are included. Typical dishes include dal bhat (rice and lentils), noodles, vegetable curries, soups, pancakes, and breads. At lower elevations, some tea houses may offer Western-style meals such as pizza or fried rice, but variety decreases at higher altitudes.
Breakfasts usually consist of bread (toast, chapatti, Tibetan bread), eggs, porridge, or muesli with tea/coffee.
Lunch is taken at tea houses along the route.
Dinner is served at the lodge where you overnight.
Snacks, bottled drinks, and alcohol are not included but can be purchased locally.

Dietary requirements
Vegetarian options are common, but strict diets such as gluten-free, vegan, or lactose-free are difficult to maintain. Many soups and sauces contain gluten, and dairy alternatives are scarce. We strongly recommend bringing supplementary snacks such as protein bars, nuts, or instant meals if you have dietary restrictions.

Drinking water
Hydration is essential at altitude, with at least 3–4 litres recommended daily. We discourage purchasing bottled water to reduce plastic waste.
• Boiled water is available in lodges for approx. 150–300 rupees (US$1.20–2.30) per litre, increasing with altitude.
• Free cold water is also available but must be treated before drinking. Carry a refillable bottle or bladder and use purification tablets, filters, or Steripens.
• Power banks or spare batteries are useful if you use electronic sterilisation devices.
Carrying a thermos of boiled water at night can also double as a hot water bottle in colder regions.

Health & vaccinations
There are no mandatory vaccinations for Nepal, but several are recommended: tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis A, and diphtheria. Depending on your travel history, your doctor may also suggest hepatitis B, cholera, rabies, Japanese encephalitis, or tuberculosis.
• A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required if you are travelling from or transiting through a yellow-fever area.
• Some travellers may also need proof of a polio vaccination.
• Malaria risk in Nepal is negligible in the trekking regions, so tablets are not normally required.
• Dengue fever and chikungunya are present at lower altitudes — protect against mosquito bites with repellent.
• Cold, dry air at altitude can cause the so-called “Khumbu cough” — wearing a buff or scarf helps filter the air and protect your lungs.
Please consult your GP or a travel clinic at least 6–8 weeks before departure for personalised advice.

Flights in Nepal
Most Lukla flights operate via Ramechhap Airport (Manthali), about 4–5 hours by road from Kathmandu. This arrangement was introduced due to congestion at Kathmandu’s airport. Mountain flying is highly weather-dependent, and delays or cancellations are common. Nepalese carriers do not operate to EU safety standards, and all remain on the EU’s banned list. While flights are operated by experienced mountain pilots, this risk should be carefully considered. If flights are delayed, extra nights and transfers are organised locally — patience is part of the Himalayan adventure.

Luggage & porterage
Porters will carry up to 10–12 kg per trekker. Keep baggage light and within limits to protect porter welfare. A duffle bag is usually provided. You carry your own daypack (approx. 5–7 kg) with water, warm clothing, camera, and personal items. Excess luggage can be stored at your Kathmandu hotel.

Guides & tipping
You’ll trek with an experienced English-speaking guide and a team of porters. Tipping is customary and a key part of Nepalese trekking culture. As a guideline, US$10–15 per trekker per day, shared among the team, is appropriate. The exact amount is at your discretion and should reflect service received.

Responsible travel
Please respect Sherpa culture and mountain traditions. Dress modestly near monasteries, ask permission before photographing people, and avoid single-use plastics. Carry a reusable bottle, use boiled or filtered water, and consider buying local snacks and handicrafts to support village economies.

Weather & trekking seasons
Conditions vary by season:
Autumn (Sept–Nov): Clear skies, mild days, cold nights; the most popular season for trekking.
Winter (Dec–Feb): Very cold nights (down to -20°C at altitude) but quiet trails and crisp views.
Spring (Mar–May): Warmer days with blooming rhododendrons; afternoons may be hazy.
Snow is possible at any time, and weather in the Himalaya is always changeable — pack for all conditions.

Passport & visa
A valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity is required. Tourist visas for Nepal can be obtained on arrival at Kathmandu Airport (15, 30, or 90 days) or in advance from a Nepalese embassy. The on-arrival process involves filling out a form (online in advance or at an airport kiosk), paying the fee in cash (USD preferred), and presenting your documents at immigration. Supporting documents (flights, hotels) will be sent 4–6 weeks prior to departure to assist your application.

Insurance
Comprehensive insurance is mandatory and must cover trekking up to 6,000 m, emergency medical expenses, helicopter evacuation, and repatriation. Proof of insurance may be required before departure.

Group size
This trek operates with a minimum of 2 participants and a maximum of 20, offering both companionship and flexibility on the trail.

Money
Bring enough Nepalese rupees in cash for incidental expenses such as hot showers, charging devices, bottled drinks, and snacks. ATMs are available in Kathmandu and Namche Bazaar but are not always reliable. Foreign currency is not accepted in lodges.

Mobility
This trek is not suitable for wheelchair users or travellers with reduced mobility due to steep, uneven trails and high altitudes.

Cancellation policy
Once booked, this trek cannot be cancelled or modified. We strongly recommend insurance that covers cancellation, delays, and emergencies.

    everest Base Camp !!!

An amazing trip, superb service from the outset, myself and my 15yr old son embarked on this trip with some trepidation. It was well organised and our guide and the manager were excellent. The itinerary was set out in a manner so as to allow acclimatisation and rest thereby enabling completion without exhaustion. We started the trek with our guide as an acquaintance but finished as part of the Lumle family. Well worth going and a great company to go with!!!!

    Base camp Everest

I had an exceptional holiday and I am glad to have chosen Lumle Holidays Company. Although they’re a small travel company, they will give you the personal assistance at a very reasonable price, which big companies cannot give. They will take care of you from the moment they meet you to the moment you go home. I cannot thank enough Narayan, Narendra and all Nepali staff for their excellent service.

    Everest Base Camp Trek

Lumle Holidays were cheaper than their competitors, which left us a little suspicious. There proved to be nothing to worry about and Lumle provided an excellent service right from the start and to he very end. Nothing was too much trouble for any of their staff. I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again.

Everest Base Camp Trek with Lumle Holidays

I was a little concerned initially because I couldn’t find any reviews for Lumle Holidays and they were a lot cheaper compared with other companies, but thought I would take a chance.

We did book flights independently but the service was offered by Lumle. We arrived at Kathmandu and was met with a car to take us to the hotel that was outside the main tourist area, it was basic but clean, staff friendly and the area was fine. The Kathmandu city tour was excellent (although we had to pay our own entrance fees) and the guide very informative.

Then the flight to the mountains with our guide Herka (not sure of the spelling). His English was not brilliant but he taught us some Nepalese and we got along great. The trek, scenery; experience was out of this world and can’t really fault it. The tea houses that we stopped at were basic but that added to the experience. The guides also act as waiters when you stop and do help with basically anything. The porter we had was brilliant, how he carried all the bags up the mountains I don’t know.

All in all an excellent trip that I would recommend to anybody. We will be visiting the region again in the future and intend to use Lumle Holidays and hopefully Herka as a guide again.

    Everest Base Camp Trek

What a fantastic trip, a big thank you to all the staff at Lumle Holidays for their dedication and providing us with an excellent holiday. From the very start when we made the initial inquiry to the flight back home, everything went smoothly. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful at all times. When we made the initial enquiry with Lumle we were a little suspicious because their price was far cheaper than other companies. However, this proved to be nothing to worry about because the service we received was second to none at a very good price. Thanks to Narayan for the excellent booking service and a big thank you to Narendra and his team for all their efforts in making us feel very welcome in Nepal.
