After an early breakfast, your journey continues through Sri Lanka’s enchanting central highlands as you transfer to the charming Bandarawela Railway Station. Here, you’ll board one of the world’s most spectacular train rides — a captivating journey through the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country. As the train gently winds its way through mist-veiled valleys, rolling emerald hills, and rows of tea bushes clinging to the mountainsides, you’ll be treated to a visual feast of natural beauty. Locals waving from small stations, waterfalls cascading down lush cliffs, and the rhythmic clatter of the train create a truly unforgettable experience.
The journey ends at Nanuoya Station, where you'll disembark and continue to the colonial-era hill station of Nuwara Eliya. Affectionately known as “Little England”, this highland town exudes old-world charm with its Tudor-style mansions, well-tended rose gardens, and cool, invigorating climate. It’s a refreshing contrast to the island’s coastal warmth, offering a tranquil escape into the past.
Next, delve into the heart of Sri Lanka’s most iconic industry with a visit to a working tea plantation and factory. Stroll through sweeping fields of manicured tea bushes, observe expert tea pluckers at work, and witness the meticulous process that transforms fresh leaves into the fragrant, flavour-rich Ceylon tea the world loves. A guided factory tour reveals the secrets of fermentation, drying, and sorting, followed by a chance to sample different brews and purchase some of the freshest blends directly from the source — the perfect souvenir from the highlands.
After a day immersed in the sights, scents, and serenity of tea country, settle into your evening at leisure in Nuwara Eliya. Breathe in the crisp mountain air, take a gentle walk through town, or simply relax with a warming cup of tea as the mist descends over the hills.
A Note on Train Travel: Please note that due to the manual nature of the Sri Lanka Railways reservation system, train tickets can only be confirmed 30 days prior to departure. While we always aim to secure 1st or 2nd class seats (which offer basic comfort and air-conditioning), availability is limited and sometimes only 3rd class non-air-conditioned tickets are available. On rare occasions when trains are fully booked, the journey will instead be conducted by road to ensure a smooth continuation of your tour.
