Highlights of Costa Rica

History

Before the Spanish came into power, different communities occupied Costa Rica for thousands of years, for livelihood they did hunting. It is believed that humans have occupied the jungles of Costa Rica for 10000 years. In ancient times Costa Rica served as a transit area between Mesoamerican and Andean traditions. Supplemented by the significant dominance of the Aztec, Inca, and Maya empires. Though studies and facts do not show a clear picture of Costa Rica’s original inhabitants. During 1502 when the Spanish were in power it approximated that 400000 people lived in Costa Rica. Initially gold lured the Spanish but it was not enough, so they concentrated on agriculture, as time progressed small communities formed in different areas. Progressively the population started to fall apart due to disease and other reasons, subsequently, after a century the population plunged to 20000 and after one more century, the number dropped down to 8000. In 1821 Americans took over Costa Rica from the Spanish after the Mexican war of Independence happened. As a result, in 1823 Costa Rica became a part of Central America and in 1838 Costa Rica became fully independent. By the 19th century, Costa Rica marked its arrival in global trade which benefitted the economy immensely and helped in expansion. Today Costa Rica’s economy heavily depends on eco-tourism. However, still, vices of unemployment, poverty, and debt haunt the country. What keeps Costa Rica going is the attitude of the people towards life.

Geography

Costa Rica is popular for its stunning beaches and scintillating rainforest, but the charm of Costa Rica does not end here, the highlight of Costa Rica is its ravishing mountain ranges. Other than this you can find numerous rivers, lakes, and waterfalls dotted throughout the nation. As a result, adventure activities like cycling, river rafting, and zip-lining are famous in Montverde and La Fortuna. Costa Rica’s varied geography is one of the reasons for the change in climate from region to region. The stark difference can be noticed in the climate and temperature based on elevation and proximity to the coast. Diverse land areas and climates lead to enormous biodiversity. More than 500000 species of plants and animals have been identified in Costa Rica, those who are fond of wildlife will be fascinated by Costa Rica’s distinguished plant and animal life. Costa Rica is also rich in marine life, bragging about some of the most beautiful beaches, bays, and reefs in the world, making scuba diving a popular activity.

To some extent, it helps to understand the features of culture in Costa Rica. People in Costa Rica are popular for their cool attitude, positive approach towards life, and relaxed nature. Costa Ricans’ unworried way of living supported by one of the thriving nations in Central America makes the people happy-go-lucky.

Food

As anyone would have thought Costa Rica food is inspired by Spanish, South American, and Central American styles. Be ready for some lip-smacking cuisine.

Local cuisine – food and drink

In Costa Rica, lunch is the main meal of the day. Rice and beans are important and popular components and are served in many variations. For breakfast, there is often the “Gallo Pinto” made from it, and for lunch served with meat, fish, or chicken, the whole thing is called “Casado”. Fish and steak as main dishes are also an important part of Costa Rican cuisine in all parts of the country. Fresh fruit and vegetables are available all year round. The dishes are surprisingly mildly seasoned – even for European tastes. In many simpler restaurants, you can order whole (entero) or half portions (medio) of some dishes such as “Casado” or “Arroz con Pollo”. In the menus, the tax is often not included in the price but must be added to the price mentioned The price must be added to the price.  You can find numerous restaurants with international specialties in all tourist centers and the capital San Jose. From “Italian” to “Lebanese”, the entire spectrum of international cuisine is represented. Inevitably and unmistakably, fast food culture has also taken hold in recent years. In addition to the relevant international hamburger chains, organized pizza bakers, and chicken roasters, there are also local variants such as Rosti-Pollos, Domino Pizza, and many more. Small Chinese restaurants are common in all parts of the country, where you can often eat good and inexpensive rice and noodle dishes. Tasty fish dishes are often offered not only in the beach towns. In addition to many types of seafish and seafood, there are also tasty freshwater fish such as tilapia (a type of bass). Ice-cold (tap water) is usually served free of charge with meals. If you prefer to be careful, it is better to order bottled water “Agua embotellada”. Sparkling water is called “Soda con gas”. Fresh fruit juice drinks (Frescos Naturales) are particularly popular, but they are usually too sweetened. Some of the most popular flavors are Pineapple, Mango, Watermelon, Cás, Papaya, and Mora.
