When to go Costa Rica

The ideal time to holiday in Costa Rica is between December and April on its Pacific Coast, during this period is warm and sunny, and between March and September on the Caribbean side. We also suggest visiting Costa Rica during the green season, from May to June or in November. This is the seasonal transition period, and the national parks are quieter. Wildlife is Costa Rica’s distinctive feature, September and October experience heavy rainfall. It’s a tropical country, so you can expect rainfall at time of the year, but this I what makes Costa Rica a green and lush country.

January – April

One of the peak periods as one can expect the least amount of prolonged rainfall but be prepared for short spells of showers now and then which is not a surprise in a country with plentiful rainforest.

May – June

Officially green season starts in Costa Rica. Though rainfall is more frequent, you will still find plenty of sunshine, especially in areas like the Central Valley, Caribbean Coast, and Northern Pacific.

July – August

Rainfall gains momentum but this is not a barricade for the visitors, especially for those who are eyeing school holidays paving their way to Costa Rica with plenty of activities. This period is considered ideal to view green sea turtles on the coastline of the Tortuguero National Park, and the start of whale watching season around Dominical. Those who fancy beaches can head to the northern Pacific coast which gets the lowest year-round rainfall in Costa Rica.

September – October

Rainfall is at its peak, prolonged rainfall makes wildlife sightseeing difficult, and infrastructure is hampered by the effects of rainfall making exploration beyond highways difficult.

November – December

Rain continues to persist, and when it will culminate is difficult to predict but by mid-December rain should slow down.
