When to Go in India

At Lumle, we endeavor to provide as much as information possible to our customers which helps them to plan their forthcoming holiday better. In this section of when to go to India, we have sketched a rough guide, when to travel to this country.

The best time to visit India is between October and March when the weather is warm, sunny, and dry.

During this period, the northern part of India offers clear blue skies. On the other hand, December and January are much cooler, with potential fog, while the higher Himalayas can be very cold, but with clearer mountain views. Rising temperatures in April and May can result in excellent value trips but be prepared for high humidity and sunny days.

Ladakh, down in the far north, is most accessible between June and September when the rest of the country goes through the monsoon season.

The best time to visit India’s southern states is from November onward, once the monsoon has culminated.

Month wise travelling guidelines to India

January

You can expect chilly nights in Rajasthan and the north clear for warm, dry days, making January a great period for sightseeing, although fog can hover around in the mornings. Southern parts of India are known to be a warm, sunny escape; properties in Kerala do fill up quickly though. You can grab some of the best mountain views in the Himalayas, but you need to wrap up warm.

February

As fog and mist fade away in the northern states, this is one of the best months to travel as nearly the whole country is warm and sunny. Best flights and hotels fill up rapidly, so it is good to plan well in advance to get the best available hotels and flights.

March

One of the most revered months to be in India due to the great weather and the colourful festival of Holi. The colourful paint-throwing event is great fun as everyone celebrates the victory of good over evil. The festival’s date changes every year. Holi Festival (early March): The well-known paint-throwing festival is colourful, noisy and good fun; just remember to take clothes which you won’t use again.

April

Throughout the country temperatures start to soar, making April one of the best months for exploring wildlife in the central parks. Due to warm weather water is limited, so sightings at watering holes are regular. During the daytime temperatures are very high, so we’d recommend excursions in the morning and evenings only. Due to the Easter months, flights are limited and hotels are busy so plan to avoid any disappointment.

May

Attractive offers by the hotels are for the grab, but the temperature rises significantly up to 45°C and the humidity, can be very harsh. Some camps close, as does desert accommodation. Wildlife sightings continue to be at their best early in the morning and early evening.

June

June marks the beginning of monsoon in major parts of India so you can expect wet days with humidity. June is great to visit Ladakh during June as the days are sunny and clear. But be prepared for the cold nights with extra layers of clothing to keep you warm.

July

July is another great month to visit Ladakh, The rest of the country is joyous mood celebrating the arrival of much-required monsoon rains.

August

The continuing rains and higher water levels mean that August is one of the best months for someone whose primary motive is to travel for cruising along the Ganges, between the holy city of Varanasi and Patna.

September

September can be a great month to be in Rajasthan as it marks the end of the monsoon and marks its first step in the winter season corridor providing a great mix for sightseeing, though the weather is still mixed in the surrounding regions. Ladakh’s season comes to an end, but travel is still possible. The southern part of India and the Himalayan region is still wet, and rain persists.

October

Travel is at its peak in October and the monsoon culminates in the northern part and the warm, sunny days are back. Unpredictable showers can remain in the south, but these help create beautiful, lush scenery. Mahatma Gandhi’s birthday is celebrated on the 2nd of October and is a national holiday.

Diwali (October or November): The ancient Hindu festival of lights is India’s largest festival. Candles are lit and dazzling firework displays illuminate the sky to celebrate, making this a magical time to visit the country.

November

No matter where you want to go November is one of the best months to travel anywhere in India, November invites wonderful weather alongside a host of festivals accompanies November. The Pushkar Camel Fair in Rajasthan is a unique event to witness, while Diwali, the festival of light (occasionally taking place in October), paves the way for beautiful candle displays, buildings covered in lights and celebratory fireworks throughout the country.

Camel Fair (November): Roughly 50,000 camels and goats, along with their owners and thousands of spectators, amalgamate in Pushkar, Rajasthan every year in November for the Camel Fair, truly a magical event.

Diwali (October or November): The ancient Hindu festival of lights is India’s largest festival. Candles are lit and dazzling firework displays illuminate the sky to celebrate, making this a magical time to visit the country.

December

December is one of the best times to visit the Southern part of India as the weather is warm and sunny making it a very good choice for Christmas, however, we recommend planning for Christmas to secure the best accommodation and price. The northern part of India has lovely daytime temperatures, but mornings and evenings are much cooler and at times foggy. Flight prices are the most expensive in December so book as soon as you can.

In fact, holidaying during the festival season or during the festival has always been great as a country tends to embellished with lots of colors. Although there are numerous festivals, Ganesh Chaturthi, Diwali and Holi are some of the main festivals of India.
